I need to advice, currently putting together my first pc build and undecided on my cpu, i previously decided on the 9800x3d but having some second thoughts. expected specs: 9070 xt 32/64gb b850 mb i will be using the pc for general multitasking in windows in for playing a variety of games, like cyberpunk, or football manager or doom etc and want to play at 1440p, i am lead to believe that at 1440p onwards the fps will be more dependent on the gpu but not sure, also looking at the 9700x. Uk Based.

FPS will generally be more dependent on GPU at higher resolutions and graphics settings, so a 9700x would serve you perfectly well here, but it won't be quite as good as the 9800X3D obviously, since that's literally the best gaming CPU available.

This all depends on your build's budget and other compromises.

It is true that at 1440p the CPU matter less than at 1080p competitive settings... But a 9800X3D will be faster than a 9700x at 1440p in CPU heavy games.  I saw a decent uplift in performance going from a 7700x to a 9800X3D at 1440p with my RTX 4080.

Both CPU's will pair really well with a 9070 XT but if you have the money, get a 9800X3D!

What you can also do is get a 9700x and upgade to a 10800X3D or 11800X3D ( If zen 7 really is coming to AM5 ), down the line.

9600x IS A GREAT cpu for gaming, 9700X has more cores and is just as good, but if you want the best.... 9800X3D.

Look at reviews on them all at 1440p.   It's a fairly easy decision.

thanks for the replies, yeah not really sure about the 9600x as it has less cores and will be not just be using it for gaming, 9800x3d or 9700x unless there is another option?, looked at loads of reviews but hard to find a comparison with the cpu and the 9070 xt.

There is also the 7800X3D if you want to save some money. On average, it's only about 10% slower for gaming than the 9800X3D. It looks like pricing is only about 15% different in the UK, though, so you'd probably be better off just spending the £390 on the 9800X3D rather than going to the 7800X3D for £335.

You could also save some money going with the 7700X rather than the 9700X. They're within a few percent of each other for both gaming and productivity workloads, outside of AVX-512, which is very niche. It's about 20% cheaper for very similar performance.

thanks for the reply, seems like the 7800x3d lags a little behind the 9800x3d in multicore performance because its a older model, leaning towards the 9800x3d because even though the 9700x is about £130 cheaper need to think long term as dont intend to replace it anytime soon, my current pc i have had for 8 years.

How often do you peg all 8 cores on your CPU?

Yeah, multi-core means nothing.
