New cpu, same socket..

Go to solution Solved by Needfuldoer,

You should not have to reinstall Windows just for a CPU swap.

What is the socket? And do you know the specific model of board?

Some sockets are the same, but have different compatability. For example, LGA1151 boards only officially support either 6th and 7th gen CPUs or 8th and 9th gen, but not all 4 on the same board.

Socket AM 5
Mobo : MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

Old :
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
New AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D

The board supports BIOS flashback, so you can use that to install the latest BIOS, which should address both the corruption and get you on a BIOS that definitely supports the new CPU.

Not unreasonable, but in this case you should be fine

You should reinstall windows when going from a single CCD to a dual CCD part.

I see you have already done that, but for other newer people who happen to see this thread.

AM4, AM5.. doesn't matter. Fresh install going from single to dual CCD parts.

TBH, I advise a reinstall when upgrading anything aside from RAM or GPU, but I'm always about long term stability. So curious why you're adamant about this specific change. Is there some microcode/driver reason?

Yes, windows will not assign cores properly, sometimes even with a chipset driver update. Unless they fixed it.. but AMD recommended it too at one point.
