Network wiring speed question

Go to solution Solved by Ron30,

Got a cabler in. One wire was broken, so had to run a new cable through.

So I'm running an Asus ZenWifi AX (XT8) system with 1 main router and 1 mesh node. My current setup is as follows.

The Fibre Modem is connected to the 2.5G WAN port on the primary router with a Cat 5e cable, and shows in the Asus app as a 1 Gbps connection.

Port 1 on the primary router goes to the wall with a Cat 6 cable, but shows as a 100 Mbps connection.

The wall goes to the 2.5G WAN port on the mesh node with a Cat 5e cable, and shows as a 1 Gbps connection.

Port 1  on the mesh node goes to my desktop PC with a Cat 5e cable, and shows as a 1 Gbps connection. Windows also shows a link speed of 1000/1000.

Port 2 on the mesh node goes to an unmanaged switch with a Cat 5e cable, and shows as a 1 Gbps connection.

All devices, except WIFI devices on the other end of the house, are connected to the mesh node, not the primary router. Anything connected to the primary router is getting my full internet speed in speed tests, but anything connected to the mesh node; wired or wireless, are being capped at 100 Mbps. Would this indicate that the wiring inside my walls is only Cat 5?

That would be the logical guess and what I would look into first. An easy test would be to try and bypass the wall. Take the mesh node and hook it directly up to the router. It should show 1gb.

Also, pull the wall plate off. Are all 8 wires in the plug ot only 4? For 100mb/s you only use 4 of the 8 and in the past, lazy installers often didn't bother to crimp all 8..

To add to what @Blue4130 said, you migt just have a bad connection in there some where.  I know I use keystones in my wall and they can look punched down but not make connection. So a cable tester can be handy.

So I plugged a mini PC into the primary router with a Cat 6 and got a 1 Gbps connection.

So if primary router to wall port shows as 100 Mbps, but at the other end, wall port to mesh node router shows as 1 Gbps, would that indicate that it's terminated correctly on one end but not the other. I'm almost certain this is a single cable connecting both ends of the wall ports.

Found my network tester. Looks like I'm getting signal from 7 of the 8 pins, so may just need to be crimped again.

This is why I always keep an extra 30cm of cable on each end of my cable runs. Eventually I'm gonna need to repunch
