Good Afternoon,

I have quick enquiry regarding Ram for my custom pc. At the moment, I am running 2 x 8gb corsair vangeance pro with msi b550 gaming plus with ryzen 5 5600x and seperate pcie wifi card (that supports wifi6) with rtx 3070 ti. - all the driver is up to date

Currently when I play game (eg. League of legend, gta 5 or etc), My pc can run game ( 300+ fps with 20ms - stable) but can only play youtube in 360p.

If I watch youtube and use discord to play game with mates, my pc ping goes to 60 or 70 ms.

I saw on the reddit yesterday regarding someone having similar issue and people commented to better ram but I want to know if this is ram issue or my internet issue?

I am located in Australia (using NBN as internet)

Many thanks

YouTube being limited to 360p would primarily be a bandwidth issue, not a latency issue, so ping is not relevant.

16 GB may no longer be high end, but still adequate for many tasks and more than enough for YouTube

When you say "can only play youtube in 360p", do you mean it just buffers at a higher resolution, or you literally can't pick a higher resolution from the list?

I can pick up to 4k resolution (or what ever resolution the uploader provided as) but it just buffers and when i open other tabs it takes long time to load.

Even than i tried to do internet speed test and it is fine and fast

Is YT slow only when you're gaming or always ?

How much RAM is your browser using ? If you're fully using your 16GB RAM then everything will be slowed down, but else upgrading RAM will be useless

I'ma be honest, I have 2 systems, 1 with 16gig the other with 32gigs, yes there's a slight "overhead" with 32, but in almost all situations it's not really a noticable difference at all, I often have yt running in the background and don't even notice (99% of the time)!

And yeah, I agree the resolution thing is hardly a ram issue more like bandwidth, maybe it's low to begin with, maybe there's another problem with the computer, because online pew pew games should hardly use bandwidth (yt does tho, obviously)

I think you just have weird expectations when it comes to how computers work, maybe lowering res to 1080p would already solve the issue? You can upgrade your ram to like 128gb, maybe it'll fix it, but truth is then something else will be the limitation, probably GPU or CPU...  Multitasking in windows has always some drawbacks which you have to understand and deal properly with .

Can you convert "fine and fast" into numbers?

Maybe try right clicking the YT video, click on stats for nerds. It'll show you info about the speed and buffer size.

~edit: just because you have a fast connection to a local speed test server does not mean you have a fast connection to YT servers.

Can't most likely be RAM issue, unless like @PDifolco mentioned, you're running out of RAM.

My Firefox borwser uses 1700-1800MB when playing random 4K video, that's less than 2GB.

Sometimes to fix buffering/stuttering YouTube, you want to enable/disable Hardware Acceleration and see if that works.

It's also worth making sure your PC was set up properly, if you built your PC yourself, things like if drivers are up do date, has your PC had it's Chipset drivers updated?

Or network drivers?

If you're having this issue when playing LoL, I think it's unlikely to be a RAM problem. It uses effectively no RAM compared to modern games. The minimum system requirements from Riot as of a few weeks ago calls for 2GB of RAM for your entire system. It's a game designed for potato PCs.

Basically, 16GB should be overkill for LoL, Discord, and a YouTube video, even a 4K video. 8GB would be sufficient for that.

Unless there's more active on your computer that you didn't mention, I highly doubt you're having this issue because of a lack of RAM.

I'm tempted to point my finger at the WiFi. There's a reason why using cables is so strongly recommended. WiFi can give you problems like this if you are far from the router or have walls between you and the router.
