you actually might be able to find a better cpu than that for free by now. a lot of undesirable cpus these days are considerably faster.

i'm talking about cpus that are maybe a decade old instead of this one which is 16 years old. If you want to do something with the 870 you could give it a drivers license

I would be really sketched building a system for someone else out of components that old. Even stuff in the Haswell-era, 4th gen, is extremely cheap now and has a huge performance edge. I'm seeing entire 4th gen i7 motherboard/processor/ram sets on eBay for $100 or less.

AMD Ryzen 5900X

T-Force Vulcan Z 3200mhz 2x32GB

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

Arctic Fans 140mm x4 120mm x 1

It would probably fail the driving test

Id say to build the entire rig the cost would get to the point of just a older better gaming rig. For 200$ you can no joke get lucky with 10th gen intel used gaming pcs

I have an i7 870 lying around at home with a mother board and 16gb ddr3, and wanted to put together a very budget build for my friend who has no pc or console. Just wondering what budget gpu to put in the pc. Was thinking of an rx 580 8gb

If you're just  cobbling parts together that you've got around then the 580, 480 or even just an 8gb 570 are probably ok. If you don't mind shelling out just a little bit though, you could maybe go for the ol reliable intel 4th gen or if you're lucky enough you might be able to get something from the 7th to 10th generations. Maybe even something like a 3600.

Ok so make and model of psu? Because a crappy 300w will juat flat out die with a rx580 and kill the pc.

Defo worth spending the 50$ for a decent new psu like a msi ab550w

I have an i3 550 and a GTX960, seemed to be where that generation of CPU's peaked in performance. GTX 970 or above and pretty much the CPU kept me back always. 900 series should be dirt cheap on the used market.
