Hey,

I am in the process of building my new PC. I got a Ryzen 5 9600x CPU and an MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI motherboard. They arrived today and I just noticed that the RAM I got (G.SKILL Ripjaws M5 RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL30) is the XMP version not EXPO. Is that a problem or its perfectly fine to keep? Will there be issues? Or should I return it and get the EXPO version even if its more expensive? I live in Hungary and the prices for the two are the following: XMP 50.900 HUF (∼$145), EXPO 59.000 HUF (∼$170).

Thanks in advance

There's no issues, XMP instead of EXPO is almost like using different software for same purpose. In this case it's overclocking RAM based on a factory profile that was tested.

check if the exact SKU of the RAM is inside your manufacturer's motherboard page under RAM Compatibility, if it's not, there might be a chance of instability. it happened to me and i had weird issues where sometimes 1 of my 2 stick randomly wasn't recognized, it was randomly one of the 2 not always the same, i've returned the non compatible RAM sticks and bought one of the SKU that was in the compatibility list and i have zero issues, i have a minimal decrese in speed due to different subtimings but it's impossible to notice any difference, stability is way more important than speed.

if the SKU of the ram is inside the compatibility list, it doesn't matter if it's XMP or EXPO certified or even without a certification, it will for sure work because it's tested by the manufacturer

Just checked it and neither are on there. In terms of my RAM model thats also XMP only, it only has the 5600MHz CL30 (2x32GB) version, and the white version with 6000MHz CL36 (2x16GB). In terms of EXPO only, it only has the 6000MHz CL36 (2x16GB) version, and both the white and black 6000MHz CL36 (2x32GB) version.

the fact that they are NOT in the compatibility list however doesn't mandatory tell you that they won't work, you might be lucky and get the performances you want, but i would stick personally with something tested by the manufacturer, i myself have an MSI motherboard (MPG x870e EDGE TI WIFI) and i don't think it's something with MSI but AMD is kinda picky with the RAM from what i seen around here, you could always try the RAM you bought if they run nicely and don't give some weird shenanigans when EXPO is active and check for about a week or two if you get some kind of instability like the PC that crashes or freeze suddenly, and also check if in the BIOS yousee correctly both stick of ram with the manufacturer + speed rate.

also check if when you boot up the system after a complete power off the PC goes for memory training, i had this issue where at bootup my PC in some occasions did memory train so i check the total RAM and i saw that only 1 stick was correctly seen and the other was "unknown" in BIOS, just a heads up, you might not experience this kind of issues at all
