Hi, I'm building a secondary PC as a little side project using only cheap, used hardware and I currently have a I5 6600k as my CPU. It works pretty fine, PC is running smoothly and with my RX 570 8gb the games I've tested are running better than I've expected. I also overclocked it a bit to 4.3 Ghz. Today I saw that I could get an Intel Xeon E3-1240V6 for even less than what I paid for the 6600k. Considering I can return the 6600k, I'm thinking about buying the Xeon as I've seen that it could potentially be better. Which one is better? Is the Xeon even compatible with my motherbaord chipset because I've read different things about it.

Motherboard: Asus Z170-P

Thank you in advance

Z170 motherboards aren't officially compatible with Xeon CPUs. Intel started locking those out with Skylake.

Support for some Xeon v5s has been bodged together on some motherboards, but you're better off going for either a newer platform or a regular desktop i7.

That Xeon is close to an i7 6700 but with no integrated graphics. In theory you'd gain a little clock speed and Hyperthreading if it worked.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

You can mod the BIOS at the risk of bricking your board. If you're going that far, you might as well just get a 9th gen or an adapted 10th gen.

Don't even bother if you want plug-and-play.

Ryzen 7 5700X3D (CO -30) - AX370-Gaming 5 - 2x16GB @3600C18 - EVGA RTX 3070 8G XC3

[PBO2] CO -25/-25/-30/-30/-30/-30/-30/-30

[BIOS] Vsoc 1.1 / DRAM XMP

i5-6400 4.38GHz @1.36v (162.2 BCLK) - Z170M-Plus - 2x8GB @3244C16- Biostar RX 570 8G w/ MSI Armor cooler

[BIOS] BCLK: 162.2 (x27) / Vcore 1.35 / DRAM 3244 (XMP timings) / FCLK 1GHz (1622) / RebarUEFI patched

ROG G531GT : i7-9750H (uv) - GTX 1650 +700mem - 16+8GB @2666 - 1920x1080@145Hz (up to 172Hz) IPS panel

[Throttlestop] FIVR - Vcore -160 / Vcache -105 / iGPU+unslice -125 (IccMax 255)

i5-4690K + Z97-AR + Panram Blue DDR3 2800 2x4GB Lightsaber Blue

iMac 21.5" (late 2011) : i5-2400S - Samsung 4x4GB PC3-1333 - HD 6750M 512MB - cheap Winten SSD (MacOS High Sierra) - 1920x1080@60 LCD

Acer Z5610 "Theatre" Core 2 Quad Q9550 - 2x2GB PC3-1333 (Samsung) - 1920x1080@60Hz Touch LCD - great internal speakers

yeah, the best you can do with that chipset without modding the BIOS is an i7-7700K.

Cpu and mobo were like 50€. What are some good am4 cpu  recommendations?

Any 6core 12thread really is above the 6600k. 3rd gen usually is looked at but for 50€ ya ain getting more. Problem with z170 is the 7700(k) is the fastest chip but hilariously overpriced
