Hey everyone!

Apologies in advance if this is not the right forum.

I own an Alienware M17 R3 which is out-of-warranty. Around a week ago, I had it sent in for repair as the VGA fan was rattling and getting stuck intermittently or completely for prolonged periods of time. There was also a small damage to the top right corner of the screen (photo attached) which is from a couple of years ago. I had not requested for this to be to repaired. Yesterday, the Dell service representative that they discovered this damage and suggested that I pay to repair this as well. The laptop had been functioning perfectly fine so far (except for the VGA fan) and so I declined the repair as they had suggested changing the entire LCD hinge-up-display (HUD) assembly.

Today, they declined to repair the fan citing that “partial repairs” cannot be done on the laptop. I asked them if there was any technical limitations for the repair, if the depot is not capable of repairing it and they just responded by simply stating “we don’t do partial repair at our depot”

I suspect that Dell is forcing me to pay for an expensive LCD replacement since the laptop is out of warranty.

What are my options here? Is this even legal? I have explicitly stated that I do not need additional repairs than the repair to the VGA fan.

I’d really appreciate it if someone can help me out here.

They can refuse repairs on any ground sadly. Not much to do. They are probably not allowed to repair the device because people scammed em before claiming existing damage was not there already.

If it's just a fan replacement thats easy to do yourself so I'd just opt for that or any random pc shop near you.

yes it's legal for people to not do what you tell them to do.

as stated the laptop is out of warranty and nobody on earth is gonna be forced to fix it. if they dont want to fix it then they don't want to.

Thank you! I had not thought of it that way. But now that you mention it, it does make sense. I’ll trying talking with them to make the repair, and if that means that I need to sign something that would prevent me from going after them claiming damage on the screen, so be it.

or like you said, I’ll go to a random shop to get it fixed in the worst case.
