Hi all

In recently bought a new keyboard and ever since buying it the computer has been randomly freezing.

Keyboard is a SteelSeries apex pro tkl gen 3

any ideas on what’s wrong and how to fix it?

huh... that's really weird... I suggest you start by trying to use a different keyboard and closing SteelSeries' software.

If your still getting crashes then it is maybe a coincidence.

If not then I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the keyboard's software and drivers.

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

So your still getting the issues while using a different keyboard and with SteelSeries's software closed?

My guess would be that it is a coincedence then, and the keyboard isn't causing the crashes. When your PC crashes what actually happens?

It freezes temporarily

after a time it unfreezes

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page. Even when you are using  a different keyboard, your pc is still freezing?

Meaning, it started when your bought a new keyboard, but right now, even if you are not using the said keyboard, you are still experience the freezing issue? Have you tried uninstalling the steelseries GG app and removing all keyboards, and just using your mouse check if it would still freeze? Also how random is the random freezing? Like even when just idle or without any application, or does "randomly" happen only when gaming?

At this point, it could either be hardware or software issue. If it's really the the keyboard that's causing it, it could either be the usb port. Try using another usb port on the motherboard. Also if you have multiple peripherals inserted via usb, try removing all of them and only have your mice and see if you will still encounter the freezing and if you try to move around and plug it in different usb port. Only use the usb port at the back of the motherboard. Try using the usb 2, instead the usb 3 and up or usb c. If it's not freezing anymore, try plugging your keyboard back and other peripherals, one by one. Also go to the device manager and see if there's any exclamation mark on the keyboard or usb. Also check your event viewer and see any errors.

The first thing you need to stablish is if the issue was caused by keyboard or just a coincidence. Because sometimes, when you buy something and install the driver and app for it, it initiate  an update on other components that may conflict other drivers. So at this point, try to install the latest bios on your motherboard and update your windows and other drivers. There are even times, specially if it's the budget variant, when you are using all the usb port that the motherboard can't support it.

yes it is when there is a different keyboard
i have not tried unplugging everything

i also tried a system reset with keeping files and the problem persists

this makes me think that its a hardware issue.

i tried what you suggested with the USB ports and the issue still persisted
it only happens while gaming under intense loads which makes me think it might be some type of overheating issue.

I built My computer.

IMO the built in windows resets option almost never fixes anything and is not an effective troubleshooting step. It is never worth doing.

Let us know what happens when you've unplugged all the USB devices, except the bare minimum.
