Right now I have a wireless g network card in my desktop if I upgraded to n would my download speed increase for games I know the Internet speed is controlled by your isp and how much u pay

Wireless G has a maximum goodput of about 22 Mbit/s. (2.75 MB/S)

Wireless N has a maximum goodput of about from 54 Mbit/s to 600 Mbit/s. (6.25 - 75 MB/s)

 

But unless you are paying for more than 22 Mbits then there is no point.

 

 

I'd look at ping too

The only way upgrading your laptop's wifi card would help is if your laptop's current card was too slow to support all of the bandwidth that your ISP gives you, and if your router supported the standard of your laptop's new card.

 

For example: I get 105 Mbps from my ISP. Both my router and laptop have Wireless-N capability, so I get nearly the full bandwidth over wifi.. I could upgrade my laptop to Wireless AC, but I wouldn't see any improvement to network speed because my router doesn't support AC.. Even if I upgraded both my laptop and router to support Wireless AC, my bandwidth with the internet wouldn't change due to my ISP only providing my with 105 Mbps..

14/5 is fast enough for gaming.. I used to game at 10/1 without many problems. (tbh, games don't really use a ton of bandwidth.)

Ping is greatly affected by physical distance between you and the game server you're connecting to. If I connect to a server in Europe (I live in Eastern US), my ping will easily be over 100 ms. However, if I connect to a server in the eastern or central US, I'll have <50ms usually..

 

The wireless standard that you use to connect your laptop to your router doesn't really change ping by that much.. Even going to ethernet would only improve it by around 10ms or so.. 

If you are having connection issues due to your local wifi network, the best thing you can do is just try to be closer to the router.
