USB4?? Thunderbolt?? Firewire??

Hey everyone,

 

i got a bit of a question that might not have an answer, im gonna ask away nonetheless.

 

I have a X870 GAMING PLUS WIFI mobo that has a "usb type c 40g port".

Is this supposed to be usb4?

Now ive read that usb4 is compatible with thunderbolt 3 (source)

 

Do you believe i could use an apple thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter to use my old blackmagic ultrastudio express?

Or maybe even my thunderbolt 2 to firewire adapter?

 

I guess thats not really possible but maybe someone has a bit of experience with that!

No. What that means is that it's a USB Type-C port that has 40 Gbps of bandwidth. 40 Gbps implies that it is USB4 (Gen 3×2), because that's the only USB version to support that kind of speed.

 

No idea about the adapters. Since you already have the hardware there should be no harm in trying.

Yes, you board has the latest generation of dedicated USB4 chips unlike my X670E board that used an Intel Maple Ridge Thunderbolt controller and just called it USB4.

The backwards and cross compatibility between USB4 and Thunderbolt is always a bit wonky, though I don't know what you mean by "adapters". Its all Type C, there is nothing to adapt. 

 

Just have to plug it all in and hope for the best.

thunderbolt 2 is the same port as mini-displayport, theres an active adapter from apple i think

Oh, I missed that part about a TB2 device you're trying to use. Well, even with modern TB devices its been a crapshoot on whats been compatible so I certainly can't say it will definitely work. Best I can suggest is give it a try.
