Computer Speakers for a desktop

Go to solution Solved by saintlouisbagels,

I don’t think you’re going to find any kind of meaningful upgrade from the ProMedia 2.1 with a budget below $200.

Maybe go on Facebook Marketplace and try to find someone selling a receiver/amplifier and speakers. You’ve hit the jackpot if you can find ‘Andrew Jones’ Pioneer speakers or KEF Q-series speakers within your budget.

Maybe try out the Swans M10 Plus?

I owned my set the same time my roommate owned his ProMedia 2.1 in college (around 2012, both $120-$150) and I would say the Swans were the better pick for the same price. Although, you need a LOT of desk space because the “subwoofer” unit is more like a midwoofer that sits on your desk, but it gets decently low like a sub!

A decently good set of speakers I discovered recently are the Creative Pebble Pro. They've got plenty of bass for not including a dedicated woofer, they can be powered by the USB-C port they're plugged in with up to 15W or with a 30W or higher USB-PD power source, they can do 30W RMS, 60W peak.

Creative Pebble Pro Minimalistische 2.0-USB-Computerlautsprecher mit Bluetooth® 5.3 und anpassbarer RGB-Beleuchtung - Creative Labs (Deutschland)

Given their audio quality, they're fairly affordable at around 70 EUR (they're actually on sale for just 54 EUR on their website)

Website that is good please and thanks.

There are essentially no trustworthy websites besides RTINGS and TheWirecutter nowadays when it comes to ranking things and reviews. Most Top 5 / Top 10 sites are funded by affiliation links and therefore fake experiences to attract more clicks.

And ESPECIALLY with respect to audio.. a ranking website is worthless because the opinions towards audio are extremely subjective.

THIS IS the website (and Reddit) if you want advice on computer speakers.

Now tell us your budget, because the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers are still a solid modern suggestion.

Id move up to 5" studio monitors then.

Presonus, Edifier, Mackie, etc etc etc.

They have their own built in amplifiers so they plug right into the motherboard and work

5" versions have enough low end to not need a sub, within reason.

It's a sound quality step up from 2.1 imo.

This matters and should be put out as one of the first things... otherwise I'd recommend something like a genelec 8010 + a huge subwoofer.

As touched on already, no major upgrades over what you have at your current price point if you're buying new.

Kind of the next "obvious" step up would be the JBL mk2 305p on sale or used/refurbed. They can be found for around 200-250 (plus you'll need 2x cables).

3900x | 64 GB RAM | RTX 2080

1.5TB Optane P4800X | 2TB Micron 1100 SSD | 16TB NAS w/ 10Gbe
LG C4 + QN90A | Sony AZ7000ES | Polk R200+R100, ELAC OW4.2, SVS PB12-NSD + 3x SB1000 | HD800
