Hello all, I was originally going to do a fairly powerful gaming build, but then I realized that all of the PC gaming I do is Windows XP era. So for my first build I would like to build a powerful(for the era) XP gaming machine. I am aware of the compatibility issues with Windows 7 and also I am very nostalgic to that era. I would like to remain as pure as possible. I was thinking either a Core 2 Duo or an Athlon 64. For GPU SLI/Crossfire because of how cheap it is. Radeon x1800/1900/1950 or maybe 2900 (they're actually cheaper) Geforce 7900's and 8800's are also very cheap. The motherboard is proving to be difficult because of the cost. MSI 790FX boards are not too much on ebay, but the LanParty boards I've been looking at for a the Core 2 Duo are a little rarer and more expensive. RAM, power supply, and hard drives are going to be easy to come by and fairly cheap. I am not sure what to do about a case because era cases are very rare. I don't mind a new case, I just don't know how to handle the USB 3.0 front ports that are pretty much standard on the front panels nowadays. Any input would be great, especially from gamers in that era.

XP has security issues and is no longer supported by Microsoft. Can you not find emulators/ run programs in compatibility mode?

I would use Windows 8.1 Pro edition and use the provided Hypervisor to relive my nostalgia. Much easy to manage. Close to zero chances of getting an infected PC. And with current generation core i5 you can pretty much run anything in VM with just 8 GB of RAM.
