I'm recording beats through a midi controller and I have a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and 1 Rokit 5 g3 speaker and I'm very new to this stuff and I don't want to spend another 150 and I don't have enough room for a second studio monitor but is the second one absolutely a NECESSITY? I've heard things about using a mono option but i'm really not sure so can you help me out here?

Without a second speaker you will not be able to get the channel balance or depth/spatial effects right.  You can do it on headphones but you will get better results using speakers.

depends , if you can tell the difference , you should or consider it as a later buy.

How would I set this up with one for now? I have the monitor plugged in to the interface and i tried to play some test sounds and it's not working

A lot of interfaces with stereo outputs will only work in mono if the output is plugged into a certain jack output, check your manual, failing that just plug it into your headphone output

I agree with this.

Yeah I should have known that. I've decided to buy a second even though I should have known to buy a pair in the first place lol. I'm going to build a shelf and set them up on the shelf.

If you're not recording in stereo technically a second one isn't necessary. though I've never heard of people having only one speaker. If you're recording in mono then it shouldn't make a huge difference, it'll just be a pain with the sound coming from on side of you the entire time.

Save up and get a second one, you won't regret it.

Edit. Just realised that audio interface has a switch to monitor in mono as well, so if you switch to that, you're getting the full sound through one speaker. Still, get another :)

Sometimes if you buy used, you get better deals if you buy each individually on Amazon. Sometimes.
