Hey everyone so a few months ago I purchased a used fat backwards compatible ps3  it had been reballed after ylod and seemed to be running great but was really dirty from the last guy. I hadn't really started using it until recently so I decided to open it up and clean it out the inside of the thing was so nasty with gross dirt and hair I spent about 3 hours working on it. I also replaced the thermal paste with arctic silver 5 and modded the fan with a potentiometer so that I could adjsut the fan speed. So I now have the fan set to a bit faster then normal and Ive noticed the air coming out the back of the console is much cooler then is was before so im wondering did I possibly not put the correct amount of thermal paste on and now the heatsinks aren't working properly to transfer heat from the chips or is it just cooling more effectively. Thanks for the help in advance sorry for the long and non PC related topic. :)

I forgot to mention that the fan was previously modded to be at full speed all the time Ive now toned it down a bit because it was extremely loud

I've been using a laptop cooler for my ps3 as I believe it is still under warranty but I doubt it. I want to tear down my ps3 and put a clear shell on it and so some cooling mods also just to keep it running good instead of heating up my damn rooom when it's 120*f outside

I'd say it's just cooling better if it's still running.

Actually now I think about it,

I did something similar to my XB360, put in some green LED fans that moved more air, anyway,

If it's still making the same amount of heat then if you've more volume to pass that heat into then it will be at a lower temperature to maintain that whole silly "you can't create or destroy energy" thing.

(BASIC) Example:

Say you have 10L of water @ 90°C that equals 900J of energy.

You could also have 100L of water @ 9°C that also equals 900J of energy.

Now theres the specific heat for certain substances but that's not needed here.
