Need Help with Airflow

Go to solution Solved by Shaqo_Wyn,

As you can see, in the first picture, there is that wooden thing supporting the desk at the back, which will most likely block the rear exhaust. Also in the second picture you see that it is separated, you cannot remove the other half. Also I measured how deep the desk is, and it smaller than the case by atleast 5-10 cm if pushed back to the board if you catch my drift

Sorry I'm having trouble using the forums, I'm new :P

Ah I see. Welcome to the LinusTechTips forums! Don't worry, I'm happy to help. I think that piece of wood is providing some key structural support to your desk so no sawing that. If there is room in terms of the height to the underside of the desk and the height of the PC case. I'd build some kind of step that gets your PC case high enough for the rear exhaust vent to clear that wooden beam and the step could maybe come out a bit from the front of the desk to deal with the lack of space in terms of depth. You could pull your desk forward a bit so that the heat has room to dissipate. As long as the top exhaust won't be to close to the underside of the desk tho. Make sure your intake fans have filters that you clean regularly. Another option is something in this direction http://www.amazon.com/Syba-SY-ACC65010-Stand-Plastic-Adjustable/dp/B002LVUIS0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1316492816&sr=8-4 that maybe your room does have space for. Any table or stand would only have to be large enough to accommodate the depth and width of your PC case if you eliminate the problem of having it under your desk. This will also give the top and rear exhaust fans all the room they need.

Hey I am getting a NZXT Phantom 410 but my desk is covering up the rear exhaust fan. I am getting a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo and getting 2 fans for the top to get rid of the hot air. Would it be better to put the case somewhere else or would it still be okay to not have a rear exhaust but 2 fans at the top of the case. I will have 2 front fans, side window fan, bottom fan, Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo heatsink and the 2 top fans that I have mentioned.

Without the rear exhaust is this too much fans? I am planning to overclock my CPU and GPU so is there any unnecessary fans that I do not need.

You can't really have too many fans. With all those fans (which I assume are intakes) and just two top fans in exhaust you'll have positive air pressure which means less dust inside your PC case if you have fan filters. I would put your case somewhere else where the fans can have all the air they need without restrictions. I definitely recommend you have a rear exhaust fan so that the hot air that your CPU cooler removes from the CPU is actively being exhausted out the case.

I thought that positive air pressure prevented dust accumulation.

Also, 2 fans on top rather than 1 in the back, or even all 3 is better than just using the one on the back assuming all 3 are for exhaust.

The thing is, my room is all carpeted, the desk I have is the only thing wooden. But the back of the desk will be blocking out the rear fan but, the case is bigger than my desk and will be hanging out from the desk if I do give the rear exhaust some space

There is only 2 for exhaust, which are all at the top. I cannot have a rear exhaust due to my desk blocking it.

Can't you have an extra table or something in your room to put the PC case on? Look it's not a major biggie not having a rear exhaust fan because hot air rises and I'm sure the two top fans will pick up the hot air from the EVO and exhaust it out the top but it's just not the most efficient way to do things in my opinion. I see that the Phantom 410 comes with the rear exhaust fan, 1 front fan and 1 top fan included. I'd set it up like this. 2 120mm fans front intake, 2 140mm fans top exhaust, 1 120mm rear exhaust, 1 120/140mm bottom fan. IMO the rear exhaust fan is really important so that the heat getting blown from the EVO by the fan on the heatsink is immediately being exhaust out the case. Skip the side window intake fan as it'll just cause unnecessary turbulence in  your case airflow. At the end of the day it's your decision. Definitely don't put it on the carpet but I'd try to find a way to have the case high up and with a rear exhaust.

I'll take a look at that website thank you!

And no my room will have no more space to place another table. I just found out that I can saw off the part of the desk blocking the rear fan and hopefully that will help the airflow.

What do you think about that? Cutting a large area for the rear exhaust.

Meh don't go sawing your desk just yet.  :P  I'm trying to get an idea of what your desk looks like. I'm assuming it's something like this with a back and high shelves? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S09903014/ Is there enough room to place the PC case sideways or diagonally? I'm not a big fan of finding permanent solutions for short-term problems, not sure if that's clear.   I'd really try any other place or room before resulting to butchering your desk for PC case airflow. Just have a good think about, where there's a will, there's a way and hopefully not a drastic way.

Just use a hole saw, are you actually having problems with heat?

I run my pc in a cabinet with one vent that actually has wires stuffed through it and runs fine.

You should have air coming in so I wouldn't worry to much unless your having problems

@xSkull, I have my pc against wall so much as cables allow and it doesn't affect the rear exhaust in any way. If that would be my only exhaust fan maybe, but I also have top exhaust helping it. For your situation, you could leave either side or bottom fan out. Since both will be giving extra air to GPU, it really doesn't make difference which one you choose to keep.

To clear some misunderstandings I saw before. More intake = positive preassure = less dust from all other holes. Each intake fan needs filter to prevent dust from coming in that way, though.

It will be fine, not having the rear exhaust will make no difference in temps....like mabye 1'C thats about it.

Are you sure? I just think that the Heatsink will have no way to exhaust the hot air out. Will the top be able to do that?

Yes Im sure it will make no difference, the top fans will take care of that, If you are really worried however mount the heatsink so that the fan is pointing up if your ram allows that, but seriously it will make 1 or 2 degrees difference nothing more.

Oh I re read this and I can raise the pc up but the depth of desk is 48cm so the case will be sticking out at the front which won't allow me to plug cables and usbs ect.

Get an anti static wristband, have lots of time free and spend lots of time on cable management. But yeah just take your time and double check if you are not 100% certain your are doing something wright and youll be fine.

Yup. Obviously there's more ways that lead to Rome like the other great recommendations you're getting. But in the interest of having your case free and clear from any restrictions I'd keep it away from down there. The perfectionist in me obsesses about those 1/2 C differences :P.
