I have my gaming PC plugged into a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD UPS, and I have the power switch on my NZXT C1200 PSU in the off position. Last night it was storming and the power went out and came back on four times. Is it likely that my PC is damaged? I'm still waiting for the storm to end to see if my PC is okay. Is damage likely, whether it's latent, or something I'll see immediately?

I have had that happen a few times during storms or power line work over the years without being plugged into a UPS.

Never any damages or problems.

You should be fine 🙂

Let me guess. You are someone overly protective ?

It is extremely unlikely your computer got damaged by the power outages because you had your PSU turned off (with the switch) and were plugged into a good UPS.

The switch meant that no power was going to the computer. And that's the job of the UPS to provide power when there is an outage.

I think you can use your computer without worries.

So I guess the switch on the back of the PSU, if set to off, should disconnect the PSU from power completely?

As well as any switch can do.

It means that if you experience a huge voltage spike (like 600V or more), there may be an arc going through the switch. But you'll have more than a computer problem if it happens. Half the electrical devices in your home would have fried by then.

Unless you got very bad wiring/electricity, the UPS is usually enough to prevent all damage that can happen to the computer. But there's no harm in switching off the PSU if it helps you sleep at night.

Have a nice day !

We loose power a few times a year. My Plex server which is 12 years old hardware has been powered off due to power outage’s multiple times. Still boots no issue.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
