GPU upgrades *help*

Go to solution Solved by SymphonyX7,

lol what about a silver stone strider essential 500 watt 80+ bronze? I'm on a seriously tight budget...and it seems to be the only one available locally..

That's good enough. But imo, it's only 34A on the 12V rails. That's relatively low. Other 500W PSUs supply up to 42A on the 12V rails. Also, isn't that Silverstone PSU expensive? I'd rather get a Seasonic S12II for the price, or an FSP Raider for that matter since the Raider actually reaches gold-level efficiency even at high loads.

If you are seriously on a tight budget, the FSP Hexa 500W or 550W and Corsair VS550 are your best choices. They're also noticeably cheaper than the Silverstone Essentials.

I'm planning to get either a 750ti or a zotac gtx 760 2gb cuz they're both quite cheap and at an obtainable price...

the 750ti gets power directly from the pci-e slot right? while the 760 requires 500 watts psu which is what I have...

the question is...do I need a better PSU? in case I get the 760...will the GPU just consume the 500 watts and leave barely nothing for the other components? will I need at least a 750 watt PSU for the other components in my PC? like the cpu, HDD, fans, etc.?

can someone elaborate this to me further? since I'm still quite the newb when it comes to PSU and stuff...

Depends. Is your 500W PSU generic or branded? If it's branded, is it at least bronze rated and what brand is it? I'm running an R9 280X on a 500W PSU, which is much more powerful than a GTX 760. However, my 500W PSU is pretty decent. If you have doubts about your PSU, you better post what exactly your PSU is here (brand and model number).

Its recommended for you to get a better power supply for future upgrades. Seasonic is both powerful and cheap.

it's a generic PSU from d-tech... :/

Replace that junk before it kills your PC. I've seen this before with friends who bought the most powerful PCI-E powered graphics cards at the time, since they weren't willing to cough up money for a decent PSU. They thought the generic one was enough to power the graphics card since it didn't require an external molex connector. They had a Geforce 7600 GT and Radeon HD 5670 iirc, and after a few weeks their computers suddenly keep shutting down after prolonged gaming. Turns out the PSU was the weak link and it couldn't continuously supply the needed power. It was a good thing none of their components were damaged.

And since you live in the Philippines where the heat is infernal, the PSU will probably be operating at the least optimum conditions (40C or higher, so lower efficiency and peak capacity). You really must get a decent PSU. I suggest at least an FSP Hexa 550W or Corsair VS550 550W. That should be more than enough for a GTX 760 and they're fairly priced. Think of it as insurance.

i would suggest you get a FSP Aurum-S Gold 600W (AS-600) it has 5 yrs warranty and its under $100

im using a FSP 650W Aurum 92+ Platinum and i got it at $99

it handles my X Fire MSI TF R9 270 oced just as good as a 760 on SLI

the seniors in the forum always say a good psu can make or break a good build

Yeah... I recommend you to change the PSU BEFORE buying the graphics card.

A good Seasonic 80+ bronze around 500 watts should be more than enough.
