Budget (including currency): I don't know exactly since this is my first NAS build. I don't want to spend too much but I understand it is worth paying more for certain things when it comes to data protection.

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Truenas. for now, I intent to store archival videos and other files as well as a mixture of 1080p and 4K videos for video editing but eventaully I might play around with some homelab stuff

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

  • internet connection speed is only 1 gbps
  • I want to prioritize data protection (ECC ram and multiple parity drives) but I also need good performance for video editing and lots of capacity now would be ideal
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900 for power efficiency and a good amount of fast cores
  • motherboard: Asrock Rack B650D4U because it's relatively cheap, supports ECC ram, and has an IPMI port for remote management such as if my power goes out when I'm not home (which happens about once a month) I can safely shut it down (it will be hooked up to a small UPS)
  • RAM: Kingston KSM48E40BD8KM-32HM 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR5-4800 CL40 because it's ECC and is on the qvl list for the moterhboard. only 64 GB for now (mostly because of price) but I can always add more in the future. I understand that doing so on that board reduces the speed to about 3600
  • Case: Fractal Dsign Meshify 2 XL because it can hold up to 16 HDDs
  • Storage: 22TB recertified Seagate Exos drives from Server Part Deals; Lowest price per TB and I currently plan on getting 6 of these (and potentially 6 more in the future) and putting them in a raidz2 config but I've heard that might not be great for video editing

Would I need another ssd for L2arc? I know I will need an hba but does it matter which one I get?

What bitrate is the video your editing?

THats a lot of CPU power and RAM for a NAS, you can get away with much less if you need to.

Can you setup a faster network, setting up 2.5gbe or 10gbe isn't that expensive these days. Internet speed doesn't matter for a NAS.

Whats your backup plan for the NAS?

The video bitrate is 30 mbps

What do you mean setup a faster network? I asked on here before and was told that the connection to the NAS was limited by my internet speed

I don't currently have a backup plan but maybe an offsite NAS or at least some cloud storage for the very important stuff and technically the NAS is my backup for the files I have on my 3 computers

Then the NAS will likely be more than fast enough here.

You can get faster NICs and switches on your LAN for faster transfers, internet/ISP speed doesn't matter at all for NAS transfer speeds.
