I know Minecraft is a simple game but is it terrible in optimization? Sometimes my computer struggles to keep above 60FPS in Multiplayer servers and I'm on an FX-8320 @4.5Ghz and a GTX 660. What are your thoughts and does your computer struggle for Minecraft when it's 50x overkill for the game?

it kinda is, i usually play on 16 chunks render distance but it never actually loads all the chunks it only loads like 13 or 14 and I cant see the fog at all, then when i look at my cpu usage its never above 50% (I'm running a 6300 @ 4.0 ghz and a 770)

Someone once hacked the quake 1 engine (DOS, runs on systems with 32MB ram and 200MHz well) to play like minecraft.  They had the basics down, and quake 1 engine is written in C by a genius in programming, instead of written in java by someone that never knew how to program.....  Being java, it doesn't even use the video card's rendering, all done in the CPU.... so it's the worst optimized game ever made and that's saying something.  Some people will disagree with me, attack me throwing baseless accusations for "dissing" minecraft, but that is not what I am doing, I love playing it and love it - I am an alpha purchaser of it and still play it to this day. Basically if it were programmed right and with a real and efficient programming language, minecraft base (the vanilla minecraft without addons) would run great on a pentium 3 500mhz with a 16MB AGP video card.  Addons that are heavy would of course require more capable hardware, but nothing compared to what this java monstrosity requires.

This is a proof of concept that it can be done, so of course it does not have many, many of the features a full-on rebuild of quake 1 engine would take, this was just a hack to prove the concept is valid and it would work in the quake 1 engine and take almost nothing of a PC to run minecraft if it was coded properly in a proper language.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Minecraft is a single core game that runs poorly on AMD processors.

I don't think it's single core anymore, but it is worse on AMD processors

What's the definition of unoptimized you're looking for? Because if it's the ability to be played on most Intel CPU PCs, then it's pretty well optimized. On the other hand, if it's other things and what not, I wouldn't know.

Make sure you're using the 64-bit version of Java and try to give Minecraft plenty of RAM (especially if you're playing a heavy modpack like FTB Monster.

-snip-

you got it in alpha to?:D

its amazing to see how far a game can come

the issue I believe is that it started as a fun project, not meant to be the game it is now or was even a year ago. so it was coded in the completely wrong language for what it is.

that being said, i run with 128 bit textures, max settings, and shaders. those shaders look nice and i cant play without them, and i manage to keep 100 fps but that pretty much maxes out my I5, so i keep it at 60.

It is mostly CPU bound, but to play with higher textures and shaders seem to murder the gpu

I remember around 1.4-1.5 I was able to play Minecraft easily on my Intel Pentium laptop with atleast 30 fps on normal view distance. Now even with optifine I cant even reach 30 fps on tiny which annoys me so much and now I stopped playing Minecraft
