Anyone know how to convert an mp4 file to an mp3 file using itunes? I have other converters but want to do it with itunes.. so far google ai doesn't know how to answer this so any experience with this would be better.

Darned right it doesn't. Don't use "AI" for answers. (Or anything, for that matter.)

 

Under Preferences -> General -> Import Settings, you should be able to tell it to convert everything to MP3 as it's imported.

I don't think you can directly do this with songs you purchased from the iTunes store, though.

I can get the menu up but when you point it to an mp4 file it does not do anything..as you can see it's all greyed out

Modern itunes has been quite gutted and a lot of features no longer work properly. If the mp4 isn't some specific sort of mp4 with a range of audio bitrate it simply doesn't do it. It's why you are much better off using anything else.
