In theory it's not difficulty.. remove cooler, CPU, clean cooler, insert new CPU, paste, cooler. Job is done.. but I am quite worried something can go wrong!

Yes, should be that easy.

Is my write-up / thinking about the process correct? I have not done it before and whilst it seems "easy" I heard one too many BIOS horror stories.. so I'd never do it but unfortunately I must 😬

Rush hour traffic is more dangerous than a BIOS flash.

Hi all,

I gave in after 4.5 years of no upgrades and decided to get a 9070XT after much suffering today along with a 5700X3D CPU.

Staying on the AM4 platform on an X570 board for now from MSI.

I have not updated a BIOS before, so the motherboard's BIOS is sitting on a 2020 / 2021 version probably. The 5700X3D will require a new version.

After my own research on the MSI site (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-X570-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support#cpu) I found that it does support the CPU but requires a BIOS version of 7C84v1F that released end of 2023.

So a BIOS update is a must - can't avoid it.

I have a couple of questions.. do I update the BIOS with the current right before I take out the CPU / GPU and flash it using M-FLASH where it's more user friendly, or do I put in the new GPU, new CPU, and then boot it into M-FLASH mode? Does it matter?

In theory it's not difficulty.. remove cooler, CPU, clean cooler, insert new CPU, paste, cooler. Job is done.. but I am quite worried something can go wrong!

Any tips or am I overthinking this?

Thank you!

Watched a few videos and the M-FLASH is quite user friendly for my MSI board, assuming I have it.

Haha, hopefully.

Other bits of info I seen is to obviously format the USB stick to FAT32, load the file onto it, M-FLASH then select that. Everything else is done by the MSI tool which is handy.

Thanks for confirming. Anything else I should keep in mind / pay attention to?

Just take your time, the BIOS flashing process might take some time...

Some people said about unplugging things such as internet and stuff for the update during M-FLASH process. Any truth to this you think?

I really doubt it, but on the other hand it can't hurt to take precautions. I've never bothered myself.

Updated today - went well, no issues. All done in 5 minutes or so using the MSI BIOS tool from the menu. Thanks again!
