Hi All,

So, I'm trying to help out a friend with their 5800X3D system. They brought it to me saying that the system kept shutting down and after some digging, saw that it was overheating as it had a rubbish cooler on it. My friend then picked up a Noctua NH-D15S cooler which I've thrown onto the system and seems to be doing better however, when I'm running some stress testing on it (i.e. Prime95), temps are hitting 90c+. Hwinfo64 doesn't say that the CPU is thermal throttling but I was just curious if temps like this were "normal" for a 5800X3D? I understand that Prime95 is a synthetic, non-realistic load for day to day use and for gaming, I have seen between 70-80c on CPU but yeah, just wanted to run it by an experienced community and see if what I'm seeing is about right?

Cheers!

Prime95 is definitely pushing CPU's hard even compared to rendering workloads.  Seeing high temps here is normal.

5800X3D is a warm chip and 70-80c during heavy gaming I would say it okay even with a NH-D15S 🙂

Its still a bit higher than I would expect with such a cooler.  How its the fan speed and case airflow?

Oh yeah, I should have mentioned the case that the PC is in...all in a Fractal Torrent Compact case so it does have 2 x 280mm fans up front blowing air through the system quite well.

You say that the temps are a bit higher than what you would expect....what "should" I be seeing generally with that cooler on that CPU?

Thats a good case! I have the normal Torrent.

Does your friend have a rear fan in the Torrent to help exhaust air?

I would say around 5c better temperatures overall but I know the D15S can lack 2-3c behind a dual fan NH-D15.

But this is with quite high fan speed of course.

70-80c is perfectly acceptable temperatures during gaming and I wouldn't worry about it at all really.

The CPU will boost as high as it can within that temperature range and give you full performance without any problems at all.

Yeah, I also have the full size Torrent and they are great!

Also, no, there is no rear fan on the case, just the 2 big front ones and the one on the cooler itself. I forgot to answer your question about the fan speed on the CPU, I think I saw the CPU fan speed hitting like 1400-1500 (which I think is the limit of that fan) so it is putting in work.

But yeah I just want to ensure that I can hand the machine back to my friend and have them have no further issues to do with cooling lol

Adding a decent rear fan could improve temperatures as it helps exhaust the warm air away from the CPU cooler and its so close to the NH-D15S that it almost acts like a 2nd fan.

I would look into adding a good rear fan. I personally added a 'Be quiet! Silent Wings 4 Pro' to mine, these can run quite high RPM's while keeping very quiet.  They are however quite expensive.

You could probably 'keep' the same temperatures and lower the fan speed on the NH-D15S to keep noise levels down 🙂

But overall, you can safely return this system as the CPU is in no way near dangerous temperatures during gaming.

No problem at all 🙂

D15S wasn't the best value choice, it's like $120 and only one fan...

You shoudl return it and get a Thermalright Peerless Assassin or Phantom Spirit, they cost around $40, then buy a 140mm Arctic P14 for the rear ($10) , airflow will be much better

Then the 3D chips before 9800X get hot because of the 3D cache stacked below the CPU die, it'll always be hot at full load but it's normal, and in gaming it'll be 20C less

Checks out this is normal for a 5800x3d. It just has poor thermal transfer due to the 3d vcache. 70-80 in gaming is normal too.
