I'll soon have the parts to build my new pc and i was wondering about when i should update bios

my mobo is GIGABYTE B650 AORUS ELITE AX V2 and ill be using a 9800x3d

Do i install the cpu and flash the bios via the mobo button?

Do i install windows, cpu and then flash?

Do i flash without installing cpu and windows?

Is there even a difference?

EDIT: thank you for the info

I personally flash it after I do a post test and make sure everything boots up correctly before I install windows.

Remember that the B650 can come with a BIOS version that does not support that 9800X3D.

I do recommend updating the BIOS via the BIOS Flash button.

You can do this without anything installed or with everything installed, makes no difference.

You just need CPU power cable and Motherboard power cable connected if you want to update without components installed.

OP's B650 might come with a BIOS version that does not support the 9800X3D out of the box though.

There is one difference, and that is when you try to run everything out of box, and it refuses, because there's a chance the B650 motherboard won't support the 9000 series processor with it's current BIOS.

As far as "when" doing BIOS update, doesn't really matter, could be right away, could be after Windows, but definitely should be after the PC is set up or after Windows or basic apps are installed.

Keeping BIOS up to date is pretty good thing to do, doesn't have to be updated every week, or even month, you could update BIOS yearly if the system doesn't have issues or there aren't any significant important BIOS updates that should be installed.

But BIOS should be along the list of things done first, next to Windows and driver installs.

Motherboard supports flashing the bios without cpu installed in the socket.  Just follow the instructions in the manual . which normally are formatting a usb stick as fat32 file system or possibly exFAT  , unpacking the bios in the root of the usb stick (file may have to be named a certain way) , then plugging the usb stick in the specially marked for flashing bios and press the button on the button of the board.  It will take a couple minutes for the bios to be read and programmed.

You can also just try to enter bios after you install the cpu and cooler and video card - at first boot it may take a few minutes for the system to start so be patient. if it doesn't start in 5 minutes, then the cpu is probably not recognized

If it starts, you can go in bios, select update bios, select your usb stick and load the bios from the usb stick.
