Hey guys. So I haven't really been keeping up with SSDs... the last time I really looked into them, there was a lot of talk about stability issues. Now, I run Ubuntu so i'm not sure if any of the SSD software I've heard about would really help me anyway... Now, I would of course want to have an SSD for my OS, but I dont really store anything besides the OS on the one drive. I have a separate drive for my data. Since I store EVERYTHING on this other drive, I want it to be fast. Right now I have a USB 3.0 1TB drive... i'm wondering if an SSD would be a good solution for the future for my storage drive. A few things: last time I went on a trip, I had the laptop and had the drive hooked up, in my pocket. I wasn't particularly comfortable having a running hard drive on a bus .. which was bumpy... Nothing bad happened but.. it worried me. If I had an SSD the benefits I see are that its solid state (no moving parts) and speed. I assume that a USB 3.0 SSD would be faster than a USB 3.0 HDD yes? The bottleneck is the USB 3.0 right?

To summarize what I am asking: would an SSD work for my main storage drive? It would have to have a pretty big capacity... If so, I would like some suggestions for drives. Thanks!

samsung 840 evo is great, because you can get large capacities at a very good price. Read/write speeds are also some of the best :)

It would be great as a main storage drive. I also like to keep all my OS and programs/files on the same SSD.

I will be upgrading for a 240GB Force GT to a 500GB 840 evo soon

I love my EVO. So I can safely recommend a Samsung 840 EVO. They're fantastic.

I personally have a SanDisk Ultra Plus 256GB, and its incredible. This is a real world benchmark for the SanDisk and Samsung drives:  http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/SanDisk-Ultra-Plus-256GB-vs-Samsung-840-Evo-250GB/1511vs1594

As you can see, the Samsung is actually a little faster than the Sandisk, but both of them are much faster than an HDD. As an external storage drive, get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FCLG65U/

For practicality, it would not be efficient to get an expensive drive (200+ dollars) for half the space of a 60 dollar drive.

Crucial M550 is what I would reccomend, it's fast, reliable and decently priced as well.
