Weird GPU power connection issue

(A thousand excuses for my obvious lack of technical lingo, I will get some descriptions wrong.)

 

I have a H97-I/G20AJ/DP_MB motherboard, and wanted to upgrade to a better graphics card. For those not in the know, the ASUS ROG G20AJ computer has the GPU power ports directly on the motherboard, not on a separate power block. The graphics car I purchased has 2 GPU ports, both 6-pin. My motherboard, however, has 1 6-pin port, and one 8-pin port.

 

A quick search on the internet says to me it would be foolish to plug an 8-pin GPU in a 6-pin power supply. But what about a 6-pin GPU in an 8-pin power supply?

 

For full reference, here's the GPU I purchased: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/375912870495. I got it because the centrifugal fans were recommended on a compact computer such as mine.

 

I'd appreciate any input on the matter.

How do you want to power the entire system includes a GTX 980 with a 180w or 230w power brick? The GTX 980 consumes 190w on it's own!

I'm not sure I understand the question. First, I don't upgrade my computer often, so there's surely a context I'm missing. Second, when I decided on the GPU to buy, I was told that as long as my GPU drew less than 230w of energy, could fit inside, and had a centrifugal fan, it would be compatible.

 

EDIT 1: I think I get it now. For additional context, the computer doesn't use both power supplies normally. When running on my old GTX450 GPU, it only used the 180W power supply for all operations. The second one, according to the sources I've checked on, is used specifically when trying to install a more powerful GPU, so that the computer can draw on both power supplies simultaneously.

Thanks for the welcome! So, if I understand correctly, I should use that splitter to plug both 6-pin GPU power slots to the 8-pin slot in the motherboard?

 

EDIT 1: Also, wouldn't that connection require a male-male connector? I'm asking, because your link seems to be a male-female one.

It should go 8-pin from power supply (or mobo in this case. weird idea but it's what you have) to splitter, then both 6-pins into the GPU.

No clue what's on the mobo. I assumed you had a male 8-pin coming out of somewhere. If it's a female 8-pin, then yes, male-males would be the thing to get. These splitter/converter doohickies exist in all sorts of formats.
