Probably not what anyone would expect to see but still - I just got 2 SSD heatsinks from Temu:

- on the left - "SSD heatsink"

- on the right - "High-performance SSD heatsink"

Looking at both of the, the difference seems to be that the "high performance" one is about 1 centimeter longer and has more fins, while the other one is shorter with less fins, but more space between them and from what I was told growing up, more surface area = better to spread the heat, but I thought I'd ask in case someone actually has more experience - I should be using the "high performance" one?

As a bonus question - anyone ever strapped a heatsink with what look like rubber bands?

Some things to consider:

- It will be placed on a Samsung 980 non-Pro that when pushed for a sustained period has shown to reach 90C

- The SSD is pretty much passively cooled (used in a HP ProDesk G6 DM)

- I'm well aware that these will probably make little difference, but I expect they will at least slow down the heating process a bit...Amazon isn't really an option for me and Temu/AliExpress seem to offer just this type

Pretty sure the difference between the two is at most 1c if you're lucky.

Pretty sure that rather than a heatsink, prob with very high speed NVME in a laptop is the lack of airflow so there's lots of trapped heat that helps heat the NVME more.

If the rubber band is made from silicon, it's probably be fine. If it's not .... idk, might melt and create mess I guess ?

Though a periodic checkup would still be nice, to see if the band is starting to deteriorate and if it needs to be replaced.

Been a long time since i used one that looks like those, I was kinda iffy about the band they gave me so I added some kapton tape 😂

But yea, since the improvement was minimal for me, it wasn't long until I take it off and replace it with something else.

It was a desktop btw

the HP ProDesk G6 DM actually a desktop PC as well (one of those super-small business-oriented workstations), the space where the nvME SSD is doesn't have a fan, just an open front vent but nothing actually moving the air, so not much I can do there, my best option would be to delay the heating process rather than prevent it.

Yep, sorry for saying laptop, I just woke up from sleep when I replied earlier.

But yea be it laptop or desktop, trapped heat without any airflow is gonna cause problemo.

Try a mini fan powered through USB or something ?
Like 40mm fan

Those sinks will do their job, until they don't.
Just don't expect much from just that much metal.
