CPU Overheating after new GPU installation.

Go to solution Solved by CoopersHyper,

We ended up returning the 7800XT and purchasing a new motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

PC SPECS:

Ryzen 5 5600x

Stock CPU Cooler

RTX 3070

2x8 16GB DDR4 3200

750w Thermaltake Toughpower PSU

My friend recently purchased an RX 7800XT to replace his RTX 3070. We ran DDU, installed drivers, launched a game and.... Stutters, frame drops, CPU thermal throttling all over the place, we even turned the video settings as low as possible and the CPU was still thermal throttling (GPU at a chill 40 degrees.) We then tested the GPU in my PC (ryzen 7800x3d) and it was completely normal.

He then decided to put the 3070 back into his machine, run DDU, install drivers, and when he booted the PC the CPU was running at 95 degrees on the desktop with pretty much zero load on it.

I told him that he would be better off with a new CPU and he returned the 7800xt and is going to purchase a microcenter bundle with a ryzen 7700x.

We came to the internet and have been searching for solutions and we decided to re-apply thermal paste. No luck.

Any ideas what could be going on here or how to fix it? Thanks.

Similar thing happened to me recently. It might be worth buying a new cooler and ensuring its properly installed and repasted. As for the microcenter bundle, why is he replacing his GPU in the first place? The rtx 3070 is still a powerful card in 2025, and depending on what games you're playing it would be better to upgrade CPU first.

A friend gave him his old 240mm AIO, but the mounting clips are missing so we ordered some on amazon. We ensured that the cooler was properly installed.

I told him it wasn't the smartest idea, but he needed it because the 3070 was too big and covered the only other pcie slot on his Micro ATX motherboard that he needed for a WIFI Card. The 7800xt was slimmer, but longer.

Is there a need for a wifi card? Ethernet has always been fine for me (if not better)
