Build upgrade help

Go to solution Solved by g0ated,

GIven this build I made a 7900xt, it's wise to upgrade to an 850w psu.

Team AMD is way better for gaming compared to intel. Even managed to fit a 7800x3d into it.

i9-9900k

2080

Z390 MB

64 GB RAM

2 monitors Razer 1440p 144hz and a Samsung 60hz 4k

Looking to upgrade: Motherboard, CPU, GPU

considered: AMD 7900 XT AMD 7300x3d motherboard ??? I have no clue what motherboard would work

I want to upgrade these parts as I’ve had all of them since launch day except the motherboard and my 2080 is starting to have its RGB go out and it’s about time for an upgrade. Computer can still run all new AAA games at mostly ultra settings and get over 100 FPS but over heating, sudden drops, and just general age of the computer is starting to show, (struggles with Minecraft shaders for instance running at 20-30FPS) and just looking to upgrade.

Everybody is recommending a 7800x3d or lower, but I play satisfactory and have been very glad that I have my current setup with a better cpu.

if I may offer a seemingly crazy route here, you could dial back the gpu and pump that cpu and keep some wild framerates even in gpu heavy games. It also leaves a very simple upgrade path with merely plugging in a new gpu.

I present the “that’s a stupid build” build that’s actually smart in your case: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rP3RKq

jokes aside, this approach is worth considering as well as these other great lists that people have provided. Good luck building!!

9800x3d + 7900xtx + 64gb 6000c30

id just wait for the 9800x3d to get back in stock, by then the 7900xtx would have probably dropped in price due to new gpu launches so you can go with that or if whatever card thats similarly priced to the 7900xtx offers better performance (9070xt 5080?) then you can pick that instead

considering you already have a high end build ill just assume everything else is reusable including the cooler cause the 9900k is known to be quite the furnace after all

2080 is still worth around the 200$ mark or slightly less than a 3070 and that 9900k + board + rams are likely to sell at 300$ or mid 200$

Userbenchmark is an internet meme for poor user advice; definitely don't rely on Userbenchmark to tell you when to upgrade!

It's engineered to make you:

a) feel like you PC isn't enough

b) buy Intel / nVidia

(semi-forgivable on the nVidia high end.... good cards, but just poor value for money)

The fact that the rate an i5-13600K as the same score for gaming usage as a Ryzen 9 9800X3D should give you enough warning!

image.thumb.png.8ee1917f3b3944152ac52ef84dc4337f.png

(and 4% faster than 7800X3D apparently 🤣)

More generally...

This advice varies a LOT per game, but try to use something other than "Ultra" settings.... normally just dial the settings back one notch away from their bleeding edge / experimental effects and you'll scarcely notice the difference to image quality, but you will notice the silky smooth gameplay!

When you're hitting low FPS in particular games: check that your GPU is actually maxed out.... a RTX2080 is still a very capable 1440P gamer.

If you can wait, then a 9800X3D will be good, especially if you're hosting Minecraft servers / running your own world as that will push all 8 cores in a lot of configs, especially on aged / complex worlds!

If you can't wait then a 7800X3D is still a great option.... I wouldn't bother going over 8 cores for a gaming-focussed build.

This is a GREAT source of advice of which motherboards to go for:
https://www.youtube.com/@Hardwareunboxed

Whichever model you choose, check their motherboard roundups to see what the VRM stress tests are like.

Avoid the A520/B620 boards; cheap, but not good value and not suited to gaming "needs".

You'll be fine with a B650, unless you need the IO:
$100

AsRock B650M HDV/M.2+ is enough to get the most out of any Ryzen CPU, even a Ryzen 9800X3D with PBO.

$150

Several options that are enough for Ryzen 7 at least.

AsRock B650 PG Lightning WiFi

MSI B650M Gaming Plus WiFi

$200

There are a LOT of good options.

Keep an eye out for X670 options over $200 (the X670E Steel Legend was $220 in August - which is why I couldn't say no 🙂 )' it's complete overkill with even better VRMS, more M.2, better IO.

X870 will likely blow the budget, but if you end up here: X870E=X670E (USB4 mandatory/optional is the only difference), so don't pay any more that X870E... and X870 should be cheaper as is arguably a slight downgrade from X670, usually for more money!

1 hour ago, PandaLeadr said:

I actually have 64GB of RAM I just only have 2x16GB sticks installed currently as my computer won’t boot with all 4 in for some reason.

Huh strange, well I would hold onto those ram sticks and try them out in your new pc build.
