$4000 editing workstation

Go to solution Solved by Real_PhillBert,

Very nice build but I wanted to keep it m atx in the bitfenix phenom to match my gaming PC.

The fractal design r2 xl is a little big for my room as it won't fit under my desk.

But as it looks now I may have to get an atx case and motherboard.

I usually discourage Dual GPU configurations in mATX systems. They can be done, but it usually results in much higher GPU temps as the top card has no room to breath.

But if you are absolutely set on it...

Hello everyone.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some good advice and recommendations on my editing setup I want to build. I have decided that instead of buying a car that I will build this work station to follow my dream of becoming a digital media artist.

My current build is as follows:

Processor

Intel core i7 4930k

Motherboard

Asus rampage IV gene lga 2011

Ram

32gb (4x8gb) gskill ripjaws z

CPU cooler

Corsair h60

OS

Windows 8

Storage

500gb samsung 840 evo SSD for os and programs

2tb western digital caviar black hdd for current work files

4tb western digital caviar black for mass storage of files

Case

Bitfenix phenom

PSU

Corsair AX 860

Gpu

2 Evga reference Gtx 780 in sli

Any thing that you guys can do to help me make this build better will be very much appreciated.

I have $4000 for everything including peripherals. So any suggestions on those will be helpful too. I an willing to wait and save up more moneyif I need to.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry as I do not know how this will look on a PC as I typed all of this on my phone.

Seems like it would work, though are you putting it in the Phenom M?

NICE RIG. I would change a couple things though. You have a bunch of components, which means stuff is gonna get hot in that little case. make sure you get all the fans you can, or even go ATX for better cooling and room. Other than that, good choice

Yo whats up.

Very nice build but I wanted to keep it m atx in the bitfenix phenom to match my gaming PC.

The fractal design r2 xl is a little big for my room as it won't fit under my desk.

But as it looks now I may have to get an atx case and motherboard.

Are dell monitors good?

Because the only thing thatI have bought from them and not have any big problems from is my old Alienware m17x r2.

Do you need 10 bit color?

Adobe CS/CC can use multiple gpu for export but not playback. It does not use SLI.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

That's why you use the reference cards for the blower style coolers, not the open axial coolers like the EVGA ACX.  The Phenom M also has 5 expansion slots and the Gene has a bottom x16 slot, so he can leave an empty slot between the cards.  Cooling here shouldn't be an issue.

The U2312HM is also replaced by the P2314H, which is an excellent monitor choice.

Wouldn't the Asus P9x79 E WS be a better motherboard for this type of computer? If your building a workstation why not get a workstation mobo?

The Gene is the only MicroATX X79 board, which the OP stated he needs to fit under his desk.

Anyway... The build below will get you what you need with a better storage configuration.  I gave you a 500GB SSD as a system drive, but for mass storage I really don't think you should put all your eggs in one basket with a single 4TB drive, not on a workstation machine.  Hard drive failures aren't unheard of.  I'd configure three drives in RAID 5.  Using three 3TB drives below you'll get 6TB of storage with data redundancy.

Configure the graphics cards with an empty slot inbetween for breathing room, and with the CPU cooler blowing directly out the rear exhaust you should be fine in terms of airflow.  Replace the stock fans with three 140mm Gelid fans.  $10 more for the side window version of the case, but it's not exactly color coordinated inside :P

The P2314H monitors are great.  Peripherals are up to your preference of course.

Here is my build that I'm putting together for photo and video editing. It will be just as powerful.  It's not complete so you can add whatever else to use up your $4000. However I don't think or believe you need two 780's. I don't know what kind of editing you will be doing, be it's photo, video or other work. However I believe the Quadro K4000 would be better as a workstation video card. it would give you 10 bit color output if you need accurate colors to work with. Also the monitor I chose will use it.

Does anyone know where I can find more info on the quadro k4000 because I hear most 3d software will only support gpu rendering on a quadro.
