I have a family member who is a teacher and I and a few of us are assisting them in organizing their class materials. A new class means starting everything over from scratch again.

I'm trying to avoid another whatsapp group constantly pinging as they copy and past books and articles to be digitized or sourced.

Is there anything we can use as a sort of project management where they can copy and paste their links and pictures and if possible, files (small word docs and maybe powerpoints) so that a totally of 4-5 people can work on them together.  I was looking at Basecamp but there's no free accounts there

I was looking at this
https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-project-management-software

But their list seems to focus on software for MANY projects exclusively.

ideal for juggling the complexities of dozens or hundreds of projects and their schedules simultaneously.

All of my experience with teachers has shown that they tend to reuse their materials. But okay

That's more of a communications platform rather than project management per se. Is that what you're looking for? Because Discord or Slack could be great. Discord has a FANTASTIC level of notification customization. Both have a lot of options for creating channels and integrations with actual project management platforms

I have historically used Google Drive/Docs for this type of work. Everyone can work off a common set of documents

Yeah, if it really has to be free and there are no concerns over privacy (especially regarding the data of their pupils), use Google Drive. You can upload those files on there and easily collaborate on them simultaneously. For simple project management, their Sheets application (an Excel clone) offers a couple of templates to organize stuff.

It's not as simple and intuitive as many bespoke project management applications out there, but you'll have to jump through a few hoops if you don't want to spend money on this stuff. If you need more in the vein of actual project management, something like Asana or Trello would also work, even on their free tiers.

Though I have to reiterate here again that if there's even a hint of private data relating to people other than you people working on it and class materials involved, then your family member is best advised to look into a solution with their employer's IT department.
