For the past month, my HP Omen 30L has been experiencing random shutdowns citing system thermal shutdown (90D)

I dont do any intensive gaming, except Apex Legends. Even then, the fans ramp up as expected.

Lately, while I am just browsing or watching a 1080p video off youtube, I heard both the fans (CPU and exhaust) ramp up for almost 15 secs and then quiet down.

I have a 3060 which, as per fancontrol doesnt speed up.

I have a 500W PSU with 32GB RAM.

I have updated all the BIOS and other drivers.

I contacted HP and of course, as it's out of warranty, they wanted me to pay for a "one time fee" to get connected to a service tech.

I havent upgraded the stock cooler and the desktop is almost 3 years old at this point.

Any thoughts, anyone?

Below is the log I got off when the shutdown happened.

the cpu fan not works well, and that will decrease components life span by time if not fixed, its overheating, try lower the graphics sitting in game or try use a fan control software to increase fan speed

Fan control doesnt show the CPU cooler or the rear fan. Only the 3060 fan is detected.

What's the life span for it? Approx?

usually 15 years but when a fan doesn't give its actual performance overtime, the life span decreased

I haven't overclocked it or game in ultra high FPS. Maybe 10-15 mins gaming every 3 hours or so.

Should I just replace the CPU cooler with a Noctua or cooler master and hope that fixes it?

Hold on just a second guys.

This is not how you diagnose an issue.

Can you install HWInfo and have a look at the temps whilst gaming please.

We need to know exactly what is happening.... the conclusion isn't to buy another cooler for what might be a proprietory mount that won't take a standard cooler.

what in the hell is this statement? i've had a laptop spend 10 years at 95°c for the full timespan it was on, and by now i can say i have multiple systems that are over 20 years old. none of them have issues beyond scratchy fans or wonky hard drives. the lifespan of silicon is "so long it's undefined", and heat is of so little effect to that lifespan compared to other factors (like voltage) it's pretty much a nothingburger.

that aside.. the actual issue at hand...

@fun_two when's the last time you dusted your computer? my guess is the cpu cooler is just caked with dust, because i've never seen a HP system that didnt complain on boot if the cpu fan wasnt spinning.

i'd stay away from replacing components until we've run out of options that dont involve the parts cannon.

It's idling at 140F (60C) and while gaming at 60FPS (Apex Legends) max HWinfo has recorded is 190F (88C).

As I said, I dont push it for more than 10-15 mins an hour.

I agree on the statement and dont worry, I didnt rush to buy a cooler just yet. Still in researching mode.

My computer is clean as can be. I clean my computer when it's DSL time, twice a year and it's on off the ground, on my desk itself.

As I mentioned, FanControl doesnt see the CPU cooler and the rear exhaust (sys_fan) fan. Only the 3060 fan is detected.

There is no weird sounds from the fan or anything. It just ramps up on turbo (high) for 15-20 secs and then calms down. Most of the shutdowns have happened after I bring it back from Hibernate mode, say within 5-10 mins.

that's probably part of your problem there, i can tell you from experience HP doesnt necessarily have the greatest track record of making sure hibernate works properly, even if you only install drivers trough their tool.

Should should I try sleep mode for a couple of days and then check?

You are thinking that the system doesnt really shut down, just the fans are off and that heats the system?

you should be shutting your computer down. i'm thinking a driver is getting confused in the process of turning back on from sleep/hibernate.

I havent added any new softwares and have checked the apps that should start with the computer. But I will take your advice and try it for the next 2-3 days. This right now, is a daily occurance.

Why are you using hibernate instead of just shutting it down though?

Sleep and hibernate are a mixed bag.

Cuz I prefer not to have to log into everything in the morning or everything I get away from my desk to snack.

OK then but we're trying to diagnose an issue , if you don't want to follow standard processes for that because it's too much work then I'll take the same approach,  from now on ill match your effort and won't be putting in the effort to help.

Wow, chill dude. Why the hostility?

Do you shut your computer everytime you move away from your desk?
