got MSI PRO B650M-P and Ryzen 5 8400F as well as two HyperX fury 8gb DDR5, replacing old (and dead) motherboard etc.

got it all together, press power - no boot, the board flashes the CPU LED once and that's it

tried pressing the reset bios button - no bueno, checked connections - nothing.

old board used to have dying chipset causing it to freeze after about a minute of use, but recently before upgrade got that same no boot issue too

I'm suspecting my power supply - the old (used under moderate load for 5 years) FSP PNR 650W might be at fault

any thoughts?

EDIT: turns out DDR5 can be inserted facing the wrong way and yours truly has committed the stupidest mistake of her life with it

sorry for wasting y'all's time the ram was the issue (though truly the overconfidence was the real culprit)

Hi. I suspect your PSU too!

Could be that your last MBoard was not dead! I hope you have not chucked it out yet!

650W seems a bit low - what graphics card are you running? 8400F has no on-board to test PC without GPU, unfortunately.

The importance of installing a good PSU cannot be understated - a bad PSU can damage every other component, despite being one of the cheapest. And buy over-specced - a PSU barely breaking a sweat is going to last longer than a smaller one working as hard as it can, not to mention ensuring stability. It should also last about a decade, at least.

The MSI PRO B650M-P Micro ATX AM5 Motherboard supports the AMD Ryzen 5 8400F 4.2 GHz 6-Core Processor with BIOS version 7E27v17. If the motherboard is using an older BIOS version, updating the BIOS will be necessary to support the CPU.

gtx1070 is my gpu and the power supply was enough to run e5-2670 (a more energy demanding cpu) for years before so it should still be powerful enough to run the current set-up too, assuming it's not failed

I also assumed it should at least turn on even without a GPU but I get same result either way

Yup - its the PSU.

Obviously I can't guarantee it, so I recommend you ensure that you can return whatever you buy if it doesn't help. But it's really the only thing that now makes sense.

It isn't uncommon for a PSU to go from fine to dead. I had one that was gaming full speed one day, and couldn't even be jumpered on the next.

how do I actually check my bios version without turning my PC on?

the box does have "AMD RYZEN 8000 DESKTOP READY" so I assume it should have new enough bios version

I have tested the PSU with a multimeter

12.3v on 12v line

3.4 on 3.3v line

5 on the dot on the 5v line

is there still any chance it's the culprit?

you can't, you'd have to reach BIOS to check version,

you can update BIOS through BIOS flash option without CPU, you'd need USB stick with latest BIOS, it's worth a try if you have USB and somewhere where you can download the BIOS, extract the files and place them in the USB

it's slightly delicate process but shouldn't be hard if you follow the steps precisely.
