Hi!

I have been thinking since July about doing an industrial PhD in machine learning and big data related topics. I just finished my MSc in ML and Big Data and I’d like to do a PhD in the banking/telecom or honestly whatever industry as long as I feel the project the business wants to develop is cool. How and who should I approach businesses? HR people seem to be of no help, and I don’t blame them since they are usually not for these specific things. For context, I am from Europe, Spain to be more precise. I am willing to move wherever as long as I can sustain myself.

Any advice or words are welcome :)

Visit trade conventions and see if there are people working with these specific areas. Maybe there are some keynote speakers looking into these subjects already that you can get in contact with.

Also, try researching published articles on the subject, or even just "musings". Look at the writers and maybe companies they have partnered with ect. And contact them directly.

Otherwise, I guess you should go via the universities as the other leg of the PhD program, and use their network and resources to find partners to work with.

I'd definitely say hunt for the nerds instead of management

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

Since universities (and their mentoring professors) issue the degree, you should start there.

Companies often pay the university to research a specific topic. So they can have a say in who researches on it. But the university is vetting the candidate.
