Hmmm,

What monitor and graphics card do you have?

Its usually detected within Win10/11 automatically and while the HDR toggle is usually off by default, there's very little you need to do.

Eh, it's one of those monitors that can accept an HDR signal but can't actually show it properly. Maximum brightness is only 250 cd/m2. So even below the participation trophy HDR400.

yikes... my monitor has 350cd... already *way* too bright... ya'll playing with sunglasses on or what? 😅  i can't use "hdr" at all lol... -.-  (that's besides windows constantly turning it on and off, why is there still no "hdr desktop" oof?)

That's sort of besides the point.

For proper HDR you want a monitor with a peak brightness of 1000 nits (or OLED with HDR 400True Black). Doesn't mean the whole monitor is that bright. Just that it can show extra bright highlights.

An LCD with HDR 400 (non-True Black) is entry level. It's not really worth enabling HDR on such a monitor.

A monitor with 250 nits marketed as HDR10 capable means it doesn't even reach entry level. It can accept an HDR signal, but it doesn't actually provide HDR output.

yeah, ok, but any game i tried, A looked good with HDR... and B was unfortunately way too bright.  for example in OW you see *nothing* when you look into the sun... kinda like irl... so i suppose "its working"... its just not "usable"...

That's sort of the point of HDR. You get a more life-like image with better fidelity. And that requires high color accuracy and contrast between lightest and darkest colors.

If you play fast paced competitive shooters where you need to regularly track other players close to the sun, it's probably not the thing to use.

If you play slow paced cinematic single player titles and you want e.g. the sun peeking between branches of a dense forest to blind you as it would irl, then you need a proper HDR monitor.

Just saying that this monitor won't be able to provide such an experience. It could still be a good/usable experience, but maybe not the experience OP expects.

yeah, but that's what im saying,  it looks "good" and "realistic", just a bit too realistic maybe its not something I'd want to use, in the current state, because it makes you literally lose games, despite looking "good"...

also you see its weird when i say "its too bright" and the answer is "well actually its not bright enough"... as even more brightness would make it even worse lol...

Other game i tried with HDR was Resident Evil 3 remak, and again it looked kind of good, except its a dark and gritty game and those kind of lighting effects don't fit the theme at all, also made my eyes kinda hurt due to the stark contrast (ironically!) between the dark game and some of the glaringly bright lights...

So to me HDR for gaming is really mostly a gimmick and not worth the extra cost (as I'd have to turn it off anyways) might be good for film, but i rarely watch movies, and on youtube idk if i need it either... looks good enough to me, especially bright enough (ik HDR isnt just about brightness, but that's the dominant effect, and i really prefer muted, overall more natural colors) also why i strongly dislike "RTX" i don't want everything look like some neon flooded city... that's only good for a few specific scenarios...
