Router/Modem segestions

I am looking for a new router or modem to do a culple of things. I am getting AT&T fiber internet soon and I am also open to any rackmountable solutions

1. I want to install a VPN such as Proton VPN on it
2. I want it to support DNS over HTTPS

I am also open to any rackmountable solutions so long as they are not too expensive and features are not locked behind a subscription.

First of all the AT&T Gateway is something you have to use. Unlike Docsis Cable internet where you can buy your own modem, Fiber internet doesnt work that way. The AT&T Gateway does support a IP pass thru mode that basically turns the router portion of it off. 

 

The biggest thing to look for in a router is how fast it can do NAT, because thats how fast of internet it will support. The specific numbers you are looking for are the WAN to LAN (download) and the LAN to WAN (upload) through puts. Most consumer grade routers dont advertise these numbers unfortunately. For slower internet speeds you shouldnt have an issue, when you start getting in to Gigabit and beyond and can be a an issue.
