Hello all,

I am in the process of making an MC Server. Ive been told that the hardware required isnt steep so I made a server with spare parts I had kicking around.

Server Specs:
-i5 6600k
-16gb DDR4
-AsRock Motherboard
-WD 770 1tb NVMe SSD
-Windows 10

The problem now is, no matter what I do or try my Server will always lag behind. 'server thread/warn can't keep up is the server overloaded' It will be bad like 2k+ ms behind. I invited friends over to see if it would make a difference. Unanimous decision that it was lagging and stuttering. It was originally on an HDD and then I upgraded to an NVMe. Still the same issue. I've seen people say to use Java 8 I am using Java 13. I tried a few things but Idk anything about this so any and all solutions are welcome. If you have any questions Id be happy to answer them!

How much memory have you allocated (you can see the memory statistics in the GUI)?

Which Java version have you installed? Don't you need like the latest JRE or JDK (JDK 23) to run the latest version of the server?

PLEASE MARK COMMENTS AS SOLUTION IF SATISFIED!!

Im not sure. Ive ran Java 8 and 13. I havent run 23 yet. My server Version is 1.20.2 I have tried both 2gb and 4gb of allocated space. On start up it doesnt lag at all. Then after like 5 seconds the lag starts.

Uninstall all Java versions (easy to do from control panel), and install JDK 23 (don't install any JRE).

1.21 is out. Why not upgrade?

4 GB should do fine. I mean you have 16 gigs, so why not allocate 6 or even 8? But yeah, 4 should be enough, but more doesn't hurt.

That sounds weird. If it were a Java version issue, then this probably shouldn't be a symptom. Inspect task manager and see for weird activity. Monitor CPU clock speeds and temperature. Restart Windows if haven't already.

Or even better, why not run the server on Linux instead of Windows?

Haswell has, well, a point

How many people are using the server? If you've got a ton, it may be overloading.
Definitely crank the allocated memory up, that will help.
Also, check your temps. If it's old hardware, it's possible the paste job is dried out.
Any Errors being thrown in Event Viewer? Or in the MC logs?

I will have around 15 people on the server at the maximum. Im gonna try to run Java 23 and see if that does what we need it to do. I will have some updates here soon!

I'm also seeing some reports that it could be bad networking. Can you speed test from the server?
Also, check task manager > (more details)> performance > cpu > right click graph > change graph to > logical processors
Maybe there is a heavily loaded core

Yes it doesnt stop or go away when I am just standing there. I also Speed Tested on Ookla on the server Im getting 550+ Mb/s Down and like 22Mb/s Up. That should be plenty I would presume.

What if your client PC is directly connected to the server over ethernet? Then try if the problem occurs again, but first, try all the stuff that I mentioned earlier.

Just so its noted. My set up goes from Coax -> to Modem -> to Router -> to 48 Port Switch -> to Server, Client PCs, and Wifi. The main machine is over the wire. While all the other machines are over the Wifi. Also I am using Radmin VPN to allow connections.

Local direct Connection is not possible. The VPN is for LAN and for WAN Players to join.

This could absolutely be causing your issues, but also fairly easy to isolate. Requiring all traffic is required to flow through a third party is going to cause added latency, it's just a matter of how much and how well that traffic is prioritized.

Why not? You can certainly test this for yourself by typing the local IP/Port of the server on your client.

This is getting complex.. I was hoping to just use a VPN so I can invite peeps through it. Goodness.. What should I do instead? Would I have to use the IP of the Server along with the port instead of the VPN? I've never been successful in making that happen. Call me what you will but I don't know how to most of this. Hence why Im here lol.

Before you start taking action, I would isolate the issue. Connect locally to the server using its local IP and see if that eliminates the issue. If it does, then you know it's more than likely the VPN.

Okay so I disabled the VPN and setup the server with the IP. I am able to connect to it no problems. But the Lag and stuttering are still happening. I tried updating Windows and Rebooting. I also reinstalled the LAN Drivers for my motherboard, along with changing the speed to 1G Full Duplex on the Network Port. The Task Manager says that I am well within spec for CPU Usage it doesnt go about 12%. The Network seems to be good too. I dont see any hiccups or spikes that are out of the ordinary. I am able to connect to the server but the Lag is still present. Any other Ideas that I can potentially try? Or data that you request?
