I hope this is the right place to post this!

Until I turned 20, I lived with my parents in a house in the countryside, where our internet speed was a 2.5 Mbps download and 0.25 Mbps upload. Our connection, which still hasn’t changed, comes through phone lines that have been in the ground for nearly 40 years. So, upgrading the internet wasn’t an option for us—satellite wasn’t feasible, and even mobile internet is still limited to 3G.

Since moving to the city, I’ve experienced the wonders of fiber optics, and it’s been a game-changer.

Earlier this month, though, my parents got a notification from our local ISP: they’ll be installing fiber optic cables right past our house in the countryside! If we’re interested, we can now sign up for fiber internet.

I’ve actually been saving for this possibility ever since a neighboring village got fiber optic internet two years ago, hoping that eventually, it would make its way to us as well. Looks like that patience is about to pay off!

They've started digging and laying the fiber cable, so now I'm considering the best setup for our home network. I want to make sure everything is optimized for speed, reliability, and future-proofing our connection.

If anyone has advice on equipment, layout, or tips for setting up a new home network with fiber, I'd love to hear it!

Here’s the setup I have in mind:

Main House:

  • PC
  • TV
  • Video surveillance box (which, finally, I’ll be able to connect to the internet!)

Support House:

  • TV

The modem, along with the switch and video surveillance box, will be located in the attic of the main house. From the switch, I’ll run the following Ethernet connections:

1st ethernet cable: To a router (or access point) in the main house, providing Wi-Fi coverage here. ( I would connect AC to this AP)

2nd ethernet cable: To a second router (or access point) in the support house, extending Wi-Fi to this area as well.

3rd ethernet cable:  To my old PC in the main house for a wired connection.

4th ethernet Cable: To the main house TV for stable streaming and connectivity.

5th ethernet Cable: To the TV in the support house to ensure a reliable connection there as well.

6th ethernet Cable: To the video surveillance box in the attic, allowing it to connect to the internet.

I also have AC in both houses, and I will connect them using WIFI.
Ports 7 and 8 would remain open.

What do you think? Will this work?

You typically need a router between the modem and the switch/ other deives.

What devices are you planning on using here?

I'd put a switch in the other hour and run one big cable. Might also think of fiber for this run to reduce interferrence and if its a long run.

I am sorry, I forgot to add that my modem is a combo unit.
