so i got a machine from build redux,

came with a kingston snv2s 500gb nvme drive

lately ive been seeing its usage skyrocket to 100% ssd usage (it contains the os and has appx 156gb of free space) and just sit there causing windows to just hang.

(this is watching its performance in task manager

cpu, memory, and all other performance is fine

cpu usage at 5%-10%

memory baseline @ 10-13gb out of 64gb

i wanna say its chrome because i tend to keep at least 20 ish tabs open at all times and sometimes open more, but ive had as many as 100+ open with no issue. and no hanging of windows

i also wanna think its steam but i have little on its drive in terms of games or otherwise. most of the apps are hardly used.

and lastly i can switch to the processes tab to try and look for something thats hogging the ssd but all the percentages for disk only sit at appx 30% and nothing looks to be trying to take it all.

i thought it also might have been windows defender or malware bytes. but i even checked those and either they werent running or just closed.

anyone have any ideas what could be dragging the nvme usage to this degree?

i know this isnt much to go on, and its more random in occurrence and only when windows isnt doing much. its like the idle state is trying to do something but ive even had geek squad do a scan and found nothing.

any thought or ideas would be appreciated.

So even though nv2 is dramless qlc piece of garbage ssd, where they throw literally the cheapest components they can find, and call it a day.

it still should work relatywny fine, if trim/gc is working ( as in normal use, you literally almost don't use the ssd ).

no stability issues? No bsod? Try to disable chrome memory saving feature for now… if it helps it could be ssd related.

Outside of windows, just straight up freezing, or being slow to respond to any commands, even moving the mouse across the screen. Hell, I even have a couple of instances where I have what I would refer to as a bad boot. Where my sound is all garbled.
And I effectively have to reboot the machine to clear that up.
I’ll test out disabling that feature in chrome. And the whole issue is usually happening off and on. Sometimes it’ll happen three times in one day even after reboot and other troubleshooting techniques that I can think of. And other times it won’t happen for months. I may consider just replacing it if they are so bad.
I just have to figure out a way to clone it to a new solid state. As I’ll probably just have build redux send me a new one since I have parts and labor for three years.

You sure your system is stable?
did you try to run your cpu and ram on default for a while?
It’s sometimes very hard to diagnose unstable ram, it took me like 6 months one time  ( I had to run memtest from cold start, to see errors ).

any uefi updates?

i gotta say i had that kingston "ssd"  with a different name... and no, it only works for a few weeks/months at most before it starts crapping out... no dram, cheapass knockoff controller, etc will do that, and only that *reliably* lol.

Replace with a crucial MX500 and see how those issues vanish... need to install windows fresh though probably because it's likely corrupted beyond repair atp...

then a new nvme it is then. if i cant clone it then at least i have the usb that buildredux provides to fresh install.

To be honest, with that weird problems, I would not try to clone it. I would install clean new OS.
and do consult us before buying new ssd, to get something decent.

why not clone? windows it self is stable and i think ive mostly narrowed down at least one of the reasons why the ssd hits... writing a lot of data at once either moving information on or off the disk. via downloading from the internet or moving to or from drive to drive.

though it still doesnt explain why it does this when sitting idle sometimes. regardless. im eager to hear the reasons behind why not to clone.

though im still also interested in why your ideas are for a new nvme drive.

here is the board i currently have

MSI PRO B650-P WIFI for an amd processor.

You have two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots.

can you specify the budget, capacity, and location ( country ).

You have two M.2 PCIe 4.0 x4 slots.

can you specify the budget, capacity, and location ( country ).

Considering it’s only gonna be used for the operating system nothing bigger than 500gb, or worst case scenario 1tb, and usa.

Also, just a note I have a 990 pro 2 TB, but that’s predominantly used for storage and image generation testing.
