EXPO causes Safe Mode boot

Go to solution Solved by HippoPCBuilder,

Kingston recommend I buy a slower kit that they think is compatible with the motherboard.

Will contact ASUS first to see what they think.

Thanks for your help.

I have tried to use EXPO with this set of RAM on both EXPO 1, EXPO 2 and EXPO TWEAKED. All default EXPO profiles don’t boot, and instead I am told ‘this system has POSTed in Safe Mode’.

When I use the timings and voltages from EXPO 1 (and 2) but manually set the memory clock to DDR5-5200, the system boots correctly and running an OCCT stability test shows no errors.

Is this due to the limitations of my RAM? However, it is rated up to 5600MT/s.

Is this due to the limitations of my motherboard? This particular set of RAM is not on the QVL, but similar sets with similar timings and speeds are.

Is this due to the limitations of my CPU? AMD says it can only handle 2x2R ram at 5200MT/s, but many people online say that faster RAM will still work.

Any ideas what might be the issue here?

UPDATE: Then my system decided to not even turn fans on when powered on. Cleared CMOS and back to normal.

Try flashing to BIOS version 2414 https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/prime/prime-b650m-r/helpdesk_bios?model2Name=PRIME-B650M-R

And yes its supported, If it isn't working, make sure you aren't using a asus optimized expo profile. If still no luck, go to SPD, and take note of the primary timings, and set manually, including dram voltage and frequency = 5600.

I’ll try the BIOS version update.

I have already tried manual timing setting, doesnt work.

Err... 2414 is not a BIOS version.

There's 2413 and 2613 as the closest two.

It should stop blinking. After inserting the USB, did you hold down the button until it starts blinking. Then it will blink at a faster rate for max 5 min and then stop. Then you should be able to turn on the system. https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1038568/

After it turns on. PC will boot, then reboot before a logo appears on screen.

EXPO didn’t work for 2613 onwards.

PC won’t flash BIOS for 2413.

Tried EXPO I and II on 2613 onwards at 5600 40-40-40-78 or something very similar.

Tried manual setting on 3024. Should I try manual on a different version?

Or is it possible that the CPU just can’t handle speeds above 5200?

When you tested manually, did you remember to set dram voltage? 5200 is just the max speed without overclocking, board supports up to 7000. This review shows it running with 6400mhz: https://www.guru3d.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-8600g-processor-review/page-14/

When you tested manually, did you remember to set dram voltage? 5200 is just the max speed without overclocking, board supports up to 7000. This review shows it running with 6400mhz: https://www.guru3d.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-8600g-processor-review/page-14/

Manual consisted of:

Enabling EXPO I, looking at changed settings.

Disabling EXPO I.

Changing settings that EXPO I would have set manually.

@DoctorNickRunning the RAM at what I thought was a safe speed of 5200MT caused the kernel to think it was missing. Turned off EXPO and problem vanishes.

Kingston recommend I buy a slower kit that they think is compatible with the motherboard.

Will contact ASUS first to see what they think.

Thanks for your help.
