Hi everyone,

Got a farely old machine, about 8 years old with some changes inside here and there (W10 / ASUS Z87-PRO /  i5 4690K / GTX 1060 6Go / 4X4GO DDR3 1600 / Corsair VS650).

For a couple of times now, my PC "seems to randomly" restart. Always the same things, no BSOD.

I believe this started happening since I move in in my new house. I'm 100% sure it never happened before but i'm not 100% sure it started since I moved in.

Most of the time it seems like it's ingame, but sometimes not.

It also almost always shuts down when we start the vacuum cleaner on a "looking burned" outlet.

As we leave with our grand father in this very old house, I don't know if some other heavy electrical things are being started when PC restart.

I've looked around on LTT and Google with similar stories, the only thing i've done dismount everything and remounted / reset everything (RAM/Graphic card/all cables) without success.

I feel like I have 3 options :

- add a UPS. What do you think about that ? since it's happening when we start the vacuum, I assume the electricity is not super stable which is detected by one of the component in the computer and just shuts down everything to protect it. Does this hypothesis makes sense ? I don't know if this is a thing in computer, I know we have some machine at work that are very sensitive to current change and shutdown like this.

- change the PSU. It might be a default here ?

- change house 😄

Thank you for your time,

Kirya

Old house, old wiring...

A UPS is always a good idea.

How old is your PSU?

Also: Didn't you just change the house 😉

Went from renting a brand new appartment to leaving at the grand father house ! So yeah, quite different !

Well I just looked, and actually everything is from September 2014 including PSU ! Holy molly. (Beside GPU and 2x4 Go of RAM)

Any UPS guide somewhere ?

When it comes to spontaneous power failure, either the PC partially or entirely shutting down, the power supply is the most likely cause. Do you have a power supply that you could borrow to make sure?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Thank you for your comment.

I'll try and ask around if I can borrow one. I planned to buy a Laptop once this PC dies out, but I feel like it could last a couple of years still.

If you want to try improving the reliability of your PC in the meantime, you should see if something like reducing the power limit of the graphics card, via software like MSI afterburner, makes any difference. Possibly even undervolt the CPU. Reducing power consumption might help.

Hey, i'm back with this subject.

I borrowed a UPS (EATON ELLIPSE 1200 PRO / with inline power regulation) --> still having the same problem. Does that make sense to you ?

I also borrowed a power supply, will try it this weekend.

if you are using a UPS, that won't necessarily fix issues with the power supply. UPS can ensure good power into the unit, but if you are getting bad power out of the unit, you won't see a difference.

Have you had problems with dirty power in the past?

I'm not sure to understand the meaning of your sentance !

Only my computer is having issue. Other than that, i've said everything on my original post.

I just wanted to try the UPS first as it was very easy compare to swapping the power supply 😄

changed the power supply, I couldn't reproduce the usual issue when turning on the vacuum cleaner haha !

I runned AIDA64 and GEEKS3D fur mark for 5 minutes each, no issue. Couldn't run cinebench. Other soft in mind I could try ?

If replacing the power supply has made the issue go away, the best test for stability is the games you play most. If the PC runs without issues when using the programs you use most, then you are officially back to having a stable system.

so seems to have been a psu issue after all.

Cinebench sometimes doesn't want to run when other, usually monitoring software is running... but anyways that wouldn't help you much anyway,  if the issue didn't come back yet, it seems to be fixed by a new psu, most likely.
