NAS Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by tkitch,

you don't need more RAM.
You don't need a bigger PSU.  The A380 uses a bit over 100w of power, it's a flyweight.

I'd get:

A380

R5 5600

650W PSU (only if you really want one?  Not really needed)

32GB Optane (m.2) for cache:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/265884482384

Otherwise:  Start saving to upgrade yourself to 3x 8-14TB HDDs  your current storage is a mess.

Budget (including currency): USD Nothing super crazy. Probably a max of $500 total for everything just because I'm still I college student lol

Country: United States (Minnesota) I'm right near the Micro Center. Planning on heading over after work today.

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: UnRaid NAS. Looking to get into some AV1 transcoding.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): https://pcpartpicker.com/user/UnseenUniverse/saved/T8BGjX is the current part list.

This is what I'm thinking:
GPU: Sparkle Intel Arc A380

RAM: A Second kit of the G.Skill Aegis 16 GB RAM

PSU: NZXT C850 Gold 850 Watt

Also thinking about swapping out my current cache drive (the Crucial MX500 1 TB 2.5" Solid State Drive) with an Inland TN450 500GB NVMe M.2 2280 SSD

The main questions I have are the parts I'm looking at seem fine? Should the PSU be sufficient enough or should I go for the 1000 Watt one? I will be getting higher-capacity HDDs in the future but not right now. I don't think that will pull that much more power. The plan is the Intel Arc will be the only GPU so I think the 850 Watt should be more than enough.

Thanks!

why do you need a gpu for a nas

I want to do some AV1 transcoding to save some file space. I run Plex and Jellyfin containers on my NAS.

why are you installing 32gb of ram for a nas

I'm running into full RAM usage frequently. The CPU I'm using is an older one but because of that, I am limited to speeds of 2400.

why do you need an 850w power supply when nothing in the build uses 850 watts

That's why I wanted to double-check.

I wasn't planning on a CPU upgrade but I do see that one is $90 off right now at Micro Center. Would you suggest picking up a 16GB kit of DDR4-3200 with it? To swap out with the current 16 GB kit. The current PSU in there is over 10 years old so it should be replaced anyway 💀 It's from my first PC Build.

Yeah, I know the storage is a hot mess haha! That's next on the list don't worry.

I would def upgrade the CPU.

PSU if you want to is fine.

If you think your NAS needs more RAM?  It's pretty cheap, so not that big a deal.  And the 5600 would use MUCH faster RAM.

Okay, I will do the CPU then! Yeah, RAM is pretty cheap and I'm often running quite a bit on my NAS so I could use some more. I think I'll just start with the faster RAM and see how that goes but if I need more I'll buy more. Thanks for the cache drive suggestion though that's way cheaper!
