Corrupted drive?

sicmin

I'm copying/pasting this from my reddit post:

Context: I have a bad habit of leaving my computer on for days at a time, and about a week ago I got a notification telling me to reboot my pc to fix a drive error. I ended up ignoring it since nothing seemed wrong or out of the ordinary, each of my drives were functioning perfectly fine and handling their tasks without issue.

I ended up rebooting it today so the notification can go away and now my computer is acting up. Windows took a long time to boot and I assumed it was just fixing whatever issue my drive had but upon signing in nothing was working properly.

-Apps and Icons weren't loading on my desktop

-Can't open settings

-Disk Management won't load any of my drives

-Cant run CHKDSK in cmd

-Task manager crashes when I try to check disk usage

-Certain functions like run as administrator won't work

I've rebooted a few times and the issues persist without any sign of getting better. One of my drives shows up blank when viewing it in file explorer and crashes windows explorer when trying to open it, so I'm going to assume that's the culprit and remove it from my pc for the time being. Before doing that though, I would like to ask if there's a way I can troubleshoot it under my current circumstances in Windows. Like I said, Disk Management doesn't want to work, I can't run CHKDSK in cmd, and I don't think I can download any applications currently. Is there something I can do in bios to recover this drive?

Thanks, sorry for the long post but I'm a bit frustrated and I'd hate to lose this drive. I'm open to all insight and I will try to answer any questions to the best of my abilitiy and understanding.

Can you get a Linux distro like Parted Magic and boot into it?

Running CHKDSK on a dying drive is generally not a good idea afaik.

I would try to boot into one of many recovery software via bootable USB or Linux and go from there. See if it mounts, what you're able to access/recover.

SSD or HDD?

If your pc is wanting you to restart to make a repair, especially if a sector is going bad you need to do what the pc wants at the time and not ignore it. Bad sectors [at least on a HDD] can persist if not addressed.

You could boot in Safe Mode and run chkdsk

*edit, also you may want to check to see if there is a drive health software for the drive brand you have, may help.
