That is,

if you're not crazy, because if you're crazy, you can fit RTX 4090 in the budget:

  • At the same time, you could get like a cheaper GPU, or just XTX or something, wait for 50 series launch and see if any new 50-series cards are worth their price

Budget (including currency): Up to around 40k SEK

Country: Sweden

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Elden Ring, Horizon: Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077, Deep Rock Galactic (Rock and stone!)

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): The build I’m thinking about is this: https://komponentkoll.se/bygg/GeUxi

I have a 38” 4K 144Hz Ultrawide display and would like to be able to play at around 90+ FPS in at least 1440p. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It would be easy to save a lot of money on the build and have the same performance in games, but what exactly are you going for here? Do you only care about the FPS, or is there something else?

I care a lot about visual fidelity as well and if this could perform well for VR it would be great. Have a PSVR 2 and would like to use it with the PC as well when it gets support/an adapter from Sony. I will install Pop!_OS or another similar Linux distribution and won’t have Windows at all. Been gaming on Linux for years.

For VR, I think nvidia is usually considered superior and has better support, but, the use of Linux may change this, because my understanding is that AMD GPUs work better on Linux. This is all third hand though, so something I'd recommend you look into, if you haven't already.

In regards to specific parts:

- The Hero is an ultra high-end motherboard. It has a huge VRM and some premium features like USB4 on the rear I/O. It does however, NOT have 10Gb LAN, which the X670E Creator does. I would personally not buy either of these boards when a $150-$200 board often performs just as well. If you're not very familiar with these modern boards and their features, I'd recommend you watch Hardware Unboxed since they have made some good recent videos on the topic:

Buildzoid made a very in-depth video on the Creator:

Other points of saving, the phantom spirit or peerless assassin suggested above, there are quite a few recent reviews of these coolers and they perform very, very well for the price:

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/air-cooling/thermalright-phantom-spirit-120-evo-review

Noctua's long-term support is one of the main reasons to consider them, but you could buy several of these Thermalright coolers for one Noctua.

About the CPU, you would not normally buy a 7950X3D unless you have a heavy multithreaded workload and games don't really count. HUB did a video on this topic too:

If you're going to keep your CPU long-term then maybe it makes more sense, but if you're going to upgrade to another X3D in the near-term, I really wouldn't bother buying 16 cores when 8 cores does the job just fine.

About the memory: normally you would only buy 6000 for Ryzen, since above that you're starting to enter variability as to what the CPU can run in 1:1 mode. We don't know yet what the Ryzen 9000 series CPUs due to be released in August will be capable of.

Thanks for the suggestions, tips and references! Really helpful and saved me some money. Ended up buying this build: https://komponentkoll.se/bygg/qbJfy

Alright, that sounds awesome man,

the MB is bit pricey, but the little X670 features are the reason for it.
