yes, however it would not be like an upgrade. You would have to backup the files you wanted to keep during the switch and use something like gparted to change the partitions of you hdd because windows partition manager won't recognize ext3,4 which I would use for a Linux system.

Is this hard?

well you would have to wipe the SSD clean which isn't hard at all, i have done it before using DBAN and it was pretty easy to do

ext3 and ext4 is a file system that linux systems work off of common ones for windows are fat32 and ntfs

gparted is a partition managing software for linux

and the upgrade if you go from win 7 to win 8 you can do an upgrade and still retain you system files but you would not be able to do this in a scenario that is ubuntu to win 8

So if i back up the SSD then i can just wipe it clean and then install windows?

Yes, that is correct. You can even do it from the Windows installer by using diskpart, no linux/gparted experience required.

Gaming on Linux is mainly a bad idea. You have to run the games in wine and especially with the bad driver support for AMD graphics cards the games will (if at all) run badly.

I don't know how long you have to wait until you have the money to buy windows, but you can use windows for 30 (or 60?) days without entering a key without any further compromises...  ;)

[ I don't know if you can do this in the US but what I would do if i were in your situation would be to go to a scrapyard and ask if they can give you the windows xp license sticker of one of the old pc's standing around there...you would still have to re-install when buying win 7/8 but gaming would work much better  ;) ]

Should i use linux or Ubuntu? Or should i just wait untill i get enough money and purchase it at the same time? I mainly just play games.

The cool thing about most linux distros is you don't have to install them to try them out, simply burn the iso to a CD/DVD or make a bootable usb drive and boot into that device, it will give you a live linux environment to try it out and you can then install it from within that environment if you like what you see. Personally I love Linux Mint and ElementaryOS as a daily OS, but gaming is still limited right now no matter the distro. If you really only game just install windows and don't activate it I believe you have 60(maybe 30) days before you have to activate it, so hopefully in that time you can get enough money.

You could try http://elementaryos.org/ . It looks pretty (like a unicorn on a rainbow) and for me it work better than Ubuntu and it works with Steam.

I think you can only use Windows 8 Enterprise for a Trial Version. But I am not sure if you can upgrade that to Pro or Standard.

Windows 7 HP for sure, Windows 8 standard/pro I am not 100% but I believe so, all you do is install and skip activation(I haven't installed Win8 in a while :P)

Could i use this on a brand new computer that has no OS?

Yes you could download the ISO file from the links that they provide on your ubuntu, burn it on a disk, and boot using the disk to install windows. But you would have to install Ubuntu so you can have a place to download and burn your file if this is what you are asking. ;)

Yea it says that the download links for Windows 8 are included so you should be able to download it in Ubuntu. So use Ubuntu to download your Windows ISO (should be an .iso file) and burn it using Ubuntu: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
