Recently my temps on my i7 8700 have been very strange, when I boot it stays at around a respectable 55-65 Celsius. Over time it reaches around 70-75 Celsius but if I go into a game of Csgo 2 it goes down to 65-70 then after a while I get bored and play any other game and it gets to 80 Celsius then I stop playing becuase it's getting overheated but the cpu gets even hotter this time 85-90 Celsius. Cooler: stock Lenovo cooler for i7 8700

This one?

8th Gen Intel Core i7-8700 Cooling Fan Heatsink for Desktop PC Socket LGA1151 - Picture 3 of 8

If so then no wonder. This cooler is bare minimum. And if mounted just tad badly will cause high temps.

TL:DR the cooler is the issue.

I did not know such a flimsy cooler was considered decent enough for i7-8700

Not that one, it's different, I'll be sure to reply with a picture when I'm home

Ok, then I jumped the gun so to speak. Googled - i7 8700 inbox cooler

And that sorry looking thing was the result in most instances.

It is probably normal, since OEMs often fit very basic coolers that are just short of throttling, but if temps have changed significantly then I'd suggest checking your case fans are working, the CPU cooler is installed properly (the Intel stock coolers with pushpins can come loose, but OEM coolers tend to be screwed down so that they don't) and consider changing the thermal paste.

The 65-70 is likely due to lower utilisation compared to the game that hits 80 or 85-90, though it is also possible your case temperature contributes if you have a graphics card that is dumping far more heat into the case than it is capable of removing.

This part is normal and expected but I'm mostly confused by the temperatures going down in certain games after clicking off Microsoft edge

Isn't that the obvious answer, i.e. you have a browser tab (or 2+) that is using your CPU?

So you think the ag400 is a decent choice?
