Help me choose a GPU (AMD vs. Nvidia)

Budget (including currency): $1800-$2000 USD

 

Country: United States

 

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Jedi Survivor, Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon series, Minecraft, Terraria. (Not a fan of shooters/F.P.S. games).

 

Other details: Budget is only based on the PC tower. Peripherals/monitors are already accounted for. Planning to buy in the next 3 weeks or so. 1440p anything above 100Hz.

 

 

Hello all, I plan on building my first gaming PC in the next few weeks. I will purchase all of the parts for the PC from my local Micro Center. I plan on purchasing the 7800x3d cpu/mobo/ram(2x16) combo, as I've only heard great things about it's performance for gaming, which is my #1 use case. 

 

I am struggling to choose a GPU. On the Nvidia side, I can fit a 4070 ti super, 4080, or 4080 Super. On the AMD side, I can fit a 7900 GRE, 7900 XT, or 7900 XTX.

 

I want to choose a GPU that will suit the type of games I play best. Based on the games I've listed above, will I benefit more with the extra VRAM provided in the 7900 XT/XTX, or will I benefit more with the technologies such as DLSS/frame gen that the Nvidia cards provide?

7900XTX.  That is the card to get with a $2000 budget machine.

That depends. For example Hogwarts Legacy is quite VRAM hungry at higher settings. If you run out of VRAM you'll either need to lower texture details or live with frequent performance dips. Frame generation isn't really going to help with that.

 

In additional to that, AMD also has FSR upscaling and FSR frame generation. While they are not on the same quality level as Nvidia DLSS SR and DLSS FG you don't lose out entirely, as long as a game doesn't only provide DLSS. And you can also use Intel's XeSS.

The science is over my head frankly, probably a sweet spot to attaining frequency, multiprocessing, power loading and cache coordination. Try looking at comparison benchmarks with the naked eye - I think this stuff is fascinating.

This is the best I've seen a game look, ever.
