PSU malfunction

I recently bought a new power supply and built a system with my old parts (name of the parts listed below).

 

Power supply: FPS HV Pro 650W

CPU: Ryzen 5 3500G

MB: MSI B450 Tomahawk Max

Case: Aerocool Cylon

 

After building it I turned or the system and the power supply immediately started sparking up and burning. After turning off the system, I immediately thought factory defect but I noticed my front panel usb 3.0 port has both 2.0 and 3.0 connectors and I connected it both to the motherboard. Is it possible that me plugging them both caused the PSU to break or is it actually a defect?

no your case has USB3.0 x 1 | USB2.0 x 2 so you needed to connect both.....if your psu did what you said its just a bad psu (that hopefully didnt damage anything)

even if you have a hard short across the USB headers, they are (should be?) protected so they cant cause catastrophic failure.
