Need help choosing processor

Go to solution Solved by Tetras,

You're a lot more likely to get AM4 boards cheap, especially B450, but the 12100F with H610 or low-end B660/B760 is a budget choice and better than the 5500 for games. If you get a B450 board you lose PCI-E 4.0 anyway, so the Ryzen 5500 choice would matter less, though the 5600 is a significantly better CPU than both.

Hello guys,

I am building a system for a friend who is on a tight budget.I need a maximum 100$ processor(doesn't matter if it is intel or amd) to pair with a 3060 or a 4060.( he is gonna use the pc to play overwatch and league of legends)

Thank you very much !!!

Not many processors in that price range, best bang for your buck is probably the Ryzen 5 5600

Or perhaps the 5500 for cheaper if you need to

5500 is generally not a great choice as, while its slower than the 5600, as is to be expected, it also has half the L3 cache and doesnt support PCIe gen 4

System specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D [-30 PBO all core]

GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX NITRO+

Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB 32GB 6000MHz CL32 DDR5

Storage: 2TB SN850X, 1TB SN850 w/ heatsink, 500GB P5 Plus (OS Storage)

Case: 5000D AIRFLOW

Cooler: Thermalright Frost Commander 140

PSU: Corsair RM850e

Case Fans: Fractal Prisma (120 x6, 140 x3) + 2x40mm fans

id pick the 5600 if you dont want to deal with painful high freq ram tuning to get any decent performance out of it, also the 5500 will probs top out at 4.5-4.6 allcore whilst the 5600 will be at 4.7-4.8ghz allcore with static oc and abit more singlecore with pbo

as for boards there should be cheap new b450 available

absolutely worth buying the gpu used as youll get an outright superior gpu most of the time (ex 6650xt vs 6700xt at the same price)

DO NOT go with the 5500. It's a massive downgrade.
If needed, just wait and save a bit more. Maybe kick friendo a bit of cash. the 5500 is garbage

I swear people thought the 5500 was like amazing value or something

7500F is great value, tier below 7600 but only 2-3% lower performance, next to not noticeable but harder to get your hands on, not specifically hard, but just harder

the extra 16mb of L3 cache that the 5600 has makes a big difference, worth the $30 increase. It's also got PCIe 4.0 (while that might not be a deal breaker it means that slotting in a gpu means it'll show an image normally as it defaults to pcie 4.0 when on a b450 supporting it or a b550 supporting it meaning the 5500 wouldn't be let the GPU show an image)

It's also got a slightly higher core frequency which could help in some places

5500 also doesn't make sense when the 3600 performs better, there's more listings of it on ebay and it is normally cheaper on ebay as well

Struggling to see how that makes sense 🤣

Cuz the 3600 has 16 more MB of L3 cache and supports pcie 4.0

Wait i have a 5500 (b550 chipset) with a 4060 and it works great. Can you please explain what you mean ?

about 800-850 euros

Depends where in EU you are

In Germany you can get a nice AM5 build for 900EUR, that will perform quite better than a 5500 and a 3060 ! 🙂

More cache means that the CPU can process more data from the game meaning it can supply the GPU more often. Less cache doesn’t always mean the game will be bad mostly because it depends on the game you’re playing. The higher pcie gen just means the cpu and gpu can communicate quicker but this provides negligible if no gaming performance increases when going from pcie 3 to pcie 4
