Gaming Rig $600-$800 i3 vs AMD FX 8xxx

I'm looking to build a somewhat budget gaming build for a friend of mine. They would like a gaming rig between $600-800. I'm trying to make up my mind whether to get an i3 with a beast graphics card (unsure what card just yet) or an AMD 8 core with a beast graphics card.

Which is better for gaming, i3 or FX 8 core?

If you would like, you can suggest what graphics card I should get too, it would help make my life much easier

Thanks for your help in advance. I really appreciate it :)

I'd personally save myself the extra money and get a CPU in the FX-63xx area. But, the FX 8 core will beat basically any i3.

With your budget i'd suggest a GTX 760/770 or a R9 280. I'd personally get a 770 due to NVIDIA's software (Shadowplay, Gamestream, etc)

Like it matters so much which cpu you would buy. The 8xxx is only worth it over the i3 if you pair it with (multiple) high-end gpu's and i3's are only worth it for massive multiplayer games that are most of the time lightthreaded.

We're in Canada. Mostly for gaming.

I am leaning more over to the FX 8 series, but if need be I'll consider a 6 series. Thanks for the help.

Thanks a ton for your suggestions. I'll take a look at them and see what i can do. I've heard of PCPartPicker, friends used it, but I haven't just yet. Does the US PCPartPicker allow for Canadian buyers? I think Newegg.com doesn't ship to Canada.

The price to performance is crazy! You can play most games on Ultra at 45FPS+ at 1080p.

It's better than the other rigs I'm being suggested (just being factual, not trying to offend anyone) but yeah it's over the budget. Keep in mind I'm getting $100, factor in monitor, keyboard, mouse. etc. The rig has to be between $600-800. Trying to top off at around the $1000 range for everything.

What kind of games does he mainly play?

I'd rather go with this, SSD included, proper quality psu, cheap board that will do anything you like, 280x instead of a 280..

I would get the i3-4150 and save a few bucks ($30) in comparison to a FX-8320. Spend the money on a better GPU, the i3 beats the FX-8320 in most games anyways.

It depends on what games he plays, AMD really struggles in a lot of games because of its weak cores.

I have no problem getting 60fps with my fx 8320 on all the games I play apart from Arma 3/DayZ.

Especially with more games with better multithreaded support.
